Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition album
$7.59 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine elation. The fat, ...

Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition CD music
$9.95 The music of Claude Debussy, with its exotic color and quirky harmonies is well suited to performance on any number of different instruments. Japanese synthesizer wizard Tomita realized that the moog synthesizer, with its almost limitless palette of colors and sounds, would be ideal for Debussy's music. "Snowflakes Are Dancing" is Tomita's electronic vision of Debussy.
The moog synthesizer creates sounds that defy description. The synthesizer also has the ability to recreate the sounds of such traditional instruments as the harpsichord, organ, trumpet and strings. The synthesizer can mimic sound of the human voice. Tomita draws on all of these possibilities in his presentation ...

Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition songs
$6.79 Hal Ketchum got married shortly before releasing I SAW THE LIGHT, which is presumably why this album finds him shifting his focus from incisive, poetic songs to romantic musings. While Ketchum's voice is in fine form, the material here is less weighty lyrically and much glossier musically than his past work. The title track, a remake of Todd Rundgren's 1972 pop hit, is a countrified version, adding a little fiddle and steel guitar. "When Love Looks Back At You," a radio-ready single, seems similar in feel and plot to Ketchum's previous hit, "Sure Love."
Several tracks are gritty rockers that provide a change of pace among the love songs. Standouts ...

Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition music CDs
$41.99 Japanese import edition featuring the bonus track "Corcovado."
BELLY OF THE SUN may be seen as the end of a trilogy wherein Cassandra Wilson redefines boomer rock/pop repertoire from a contemporary jazz singer's perspective. From its intro of sultry jazz bass and syncopated percussion, you'd never guess you were about to hear a version of the Band's '60s country-rock classic "The Weight." Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman," best known as a Glen Campbell country-pop hit, gets a relaxed, sensual interpretation here that helps make the case for Webb's acceptance into the canon of Great American Songbook composers. A delicate, jazzy cover of Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm" sounds more like mid-'70s Joni than Zimmy.
There's a lot of Wilson's native Mississippi to be felt in BELLY OF THE SUN; as on the spare, slide-guitar-driven take on Mississippi Fred McDowell's country blues tune "You Gotta Move," or Robert Johnson's "Hot Tamales." And just when you least expect it, Wilson briefly turns into a traditional jazz singer to croon "Darkness on the Delta" over a romping, bluesy piano accompaniment. Never one to get stuck ...
