This hit album gets its title (as well as its chart status) from its title song, which was featured in the 2002 Winter Olympics. "Gold" is a stately, dramatic affair that finds Eder's theatrical voice striding magisterially atop a swelling bedrock of strings. This disc's mainstream appeal lies not only there, but also in a chirpy rendition of "Here Comes the Sun," presumably a tribute to the recently deceased George Harrison. Eder's never been anyone's idea of a soul singer, so her take on Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" won't make anyone forget Waylon Jennings' version, much less the original, but she's much more at home on the Boz Scaggs-penned "We're All Alone." A hit for Melissa Manchester in the '70s, the tune is a natural for Eder's stratospheric voice and Broadway-ready tone.
Broadway sensation Linda Eder returns collection her all-time favorite songs, among them Boz Scaggs' 'We're All Alone', Dobie Gray's 'Drift Away', the Dusty Springfield classic, 'Son Of A Preacher Man', and George Harrison's 'Here Comes The Sun' (which is set as the albums first single). Gold Music Review
Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All 8 Reviews Inspring, but not soaring This CD is a wonderful collection of music that showcases Linda Eder's range and talents. For those of us who do not care too much about showtune classics, this album is perfect to bring Linda Eder into our lives.
In my opinion, her best track is "If I Had My Way." Some of her other cover tunes would be best remembered as presented by their original artists--that's not to say that Eder's voice does wonderfully with that music, but usually the original artists has left us with a much more memorable version ("Here Comes the Sun" comes to mind).
Eder's voice is inspiring, but does not soar with as much resonance nor provide as much vulnerability as a Jane Olivor. Submitted by brianfos (Castro Valley, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
SUPERB! Everything she does is superb! When she sings, you listen. Submitted by a reviewer (Ashdown, AR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Covers Linda Eder's voice soars on this album. This is not new news for any of her fans but what is new with this album is the cover songs. She does excellent covers of "Here Comes the Sun", "Son of a Preacher Man", "We're All Alone", and "Give Me the Beat Boys". The original songs on this disc are equally good and seem more radio-ready than her previous work. I predict this will be her biggest selling album yet. disappointed Linda Eder has much too beautiful of a voice to waste like this. I don't like her choice of songs. Submitted by a reviewer (Orlando FL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What a voice! This is Linda Eder as you've never heard her before. This former Star Search grand champion and belle of Broadway has given us her most broad ranging album yet. There are many covers on this album to enjoy and you will also get to hear the brilliance of her husband, Frank Wildhorn, on some of his origianl compositions. Take special note of "Gold" from the forth coming musical on Camille Claudel (and the Winter Olympics opening ceremonies) and the 9/11 tribute "If I Had My Way". If you love this one, then get a taste of jazz and Broadway on her other albums. Submitted by a reviewer (Phillipsburg, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
