Keyboardist, programmer, and composer Kevin Toney has created an album that references in sound not only fellow electronic musician Suzanne Ciani, but also Enigma and Bell Biv DeVoe. Lovescape is contemporary instrumental pop that truly represents the music of the early '90s. ~ Matt Collar

Lovescape
$7.15 Working with producer Paul Brown, Boney James' Boney's Funky Christmas is an entertaining set of loose, funky and bluesy interpretations of both classic Christmas carols ("The Christmas Song") and more obscure contemporary selections like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas." Two selections, "This Christmas" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?," are sung by Dee Harvey and Bobby Caldwell, respectively, but the star of this show remains James and his saxophone, who breathe new life into these holiday cuts. ~ Thom Owens

| | Kevin Toney Strut CD (2001)
Lovescape
$14.45 Principally recorded at K-Tone Studios, Chatsworth, California.
Keyboardist Kevin Toney is a superb contemporary jazz instrumentalist and composer who can perform a range of styles -- including jazz, blues, and R&B -- with equal dexterity, and his album, Strut, is a good example of his remarkable facility. For this collection of primarily upbeat compositions, Toney combined his trademark memorable melodies with a variety of grooves to create an album on which his accomplished jazz and blues stylings are spiced with a strong urban flavor. Generally, this combination works; on "Karizma" Toney layers bright, chirping keyboards over a funky rhythm, and on "Secret Agent" his irresistibly catchy melody rides atop a rapid-fire dance groove. Toney and saxophonist Ronnie Laws enjoy a little give-and-take on "Passion Dance," and the two create a haunting, gracefully grooving mid-tempo number. Toney has a way with a romantic composition, and his talent for communicating tenderness without becoming saccharine is amply in evidence on the lush and elegant "Special Occasion." On the opposite end of the musical spectrum, "Aunt Mary" is a bouncy, buoyant, completely infectious blues-flavored jam that is enhanced by quirky harmonica, courtesy of Tetsuya ...
| | Steve Oliver Positive Energy CD (2002)
Lovescape
$17.69 Contemporary jazz guitarist and vocalist Steve Oliver offers something everyone will enjoy on his sophomore release as a leader, titled Positive Energy. The recording reflects Oliver's smooth, upbeat, joyous spirit through dynamic vocals and instrumentals on 12 brand-new originals. Working with Steve Oliver are such prominent contemporary jazz favorites as his labelmate, Jeff Kashiwa, on saxophone and Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman alongside the multi-talented bassists Brian Bromberg and Larry Antonino. The recording opens with the radio-friendly "High Noon," the first single to be released from the CD. The song combines the freshest licks from Latin funk and the smoothest grooves from smooth jazz in an energetic presentation with a contemporary flair. Oliver's vocals set the song apart from the instrumentals on the set and give his listeners more than enough room to enjoy the "positive energy" emanating from his playing style. On the title track, Steve Reid adds his mighty percussion to the mix and not only provides an extra layer of rhythmic fuel, but inspires Oliver's excellent guitar playing to another level of performance. Oliver's ability to tell a story is quite evident on the vocal version of "Show You Love." This song has the potential to cross over to the R&B genre due to its funky backbeat and danceability and is reprised ...

| | Brian Culbertson It's On Tonight CD (2005)
Lovescape
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You Feel." On "Secret Affair," relative newcomer Chris Botti plays Miles Davis-influenced riffs over a spacious one-chord vamp (and his use of a Harmon mute creates that smoky, late-night effect).
Kirk Whalum's silky tenor saxophone beautifully complements Patti Austin's soulful voice on "Love Will Never Let You Down," a seductive ballad about love's resilience. Instrumental tracks such as "Sensuality" ...

| | Minutes to Burn As Of Now... CD (2005)
Lovescape
$10.09 In an age of sifting through pretense for something real even the most basic relevance is subject to artistic scrutiny. Minutes to Burn is like the jean jacket you've had since middle school and still wear. It's comforting to own something that exists apart from the unsteady foundation of the current trend. This is not to say that the music is benign, in fact it is the furthest thing from it.It's an average day by all accounts in Austin, Texas where two men pick up The Austin Chronicle and peruse the musician referral ads. Todd Kegley , guitar and vocals, is united with Jeremy Reynolds, drums. Minutes to Burn is conceived. Through their mingled interests and influence, they combine to form an indie force to be reckoned with. Their musical compatibility is evidenced on such brilliant tracks as "message", my personal favorite, "static", "poison everything", "fictional", and many more. They are currently unsigned, but plan to produce and release their first full length LP very soon. Minutes to Burn was selected by the 2004 Austin punk rock compilation for inclusion in it's multimedia portion. The band also held the .2 position on the indie charts at soundclick.com for, "message" and "static". Since we all feel the need to compare bands, I guess it's a means of sifting for career listeners, I'll throw out a few names, you can file Minutes ...
