(13 Customer Reviews)
Johnson's songs are simultaneously well crafted and executed in an almost throwaway manner. "Fortunate Fool" is airy yet acidic--this surfer dude is no airhead--while "F-Stop Blues," on the surface a paean to the surfer lifestyle, is really a lament for wasted time that features Johnson's pleasant, lazy vocals to excellent effect. BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES displays the kind of insouciance born of innocence, almost as if no-one involved cared if the album sold ten copies or ten million--and of course that's the attraction.
Surfer-turned-rocker Jack Johnson has composed songs for G. Love and Special Sauce, and is signed to Ben Harper's manager's record label, so it's no surprise that his debut turns out to be the kind of laid-back acoustic funk beloved of fans of both those outfits. What is surprising, however, is the unpretentious way these songs are presented--BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES is packed with bare-bones arrangements that highlight Johnson's catchy way with a lyric, so that when something unusual happens, such as the steel drums that dimly inhabit the background of "Flake," it's almost shocking.

Awesome!! I heard Sitting Waiting Wishing from the album, In Between Dreams, and thought it was awesome. I love his voice. So I went out and bought 3 of his CDs (On and On, Brushfire Fairytales, & In Between Dreams) and I swear, I cannot decide which one is my favorite-- they are all awesome!! Rock on, J.J.!!!! Brushfire Fairytales album
$9.75 "Your Body Is A Wonderland" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
John Mayer was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Somewhere around the turn of the 21st century, guys like David Gray (who'd already been laboring in obscurity for quite a while) and Five For Fighting made it hip (and profitable) to be a sensitive singer-songwriter for the first time since the '70s. Along those lines, John Mayer appeals to the kind of youngsters who are embarrassed by their parents' Dan Fogelberg collection but equally turned off by vociferous gangstas and misanthropic heavy rockers. ROOM FOR SQUARES (whose very title, not to mention Mayer's ...

$10.05 COME AWAY WITH ME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).
"Don't Know Why" won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Arif Mardin won the 2003 Grammy Award for Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical).
A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazz singer. One thing that separates her from the pack is Ms. Jones' own piano stylings--not ...

The Band is Rollin' and the Tunes are Phat!Native sons & daughters of the mother road, playing like they mean it!The RPs show is hot, rockin', and in the bag to please! Birthed in the historic music scenes of Tulsa & Stillwater, Oklahoma, and also inspired by the legendary music of Texas & Louisiana. The band members have been active participants in the regional music scene of the south central U.S. since the mid 1970's. After a 12 year break, core members of the infamous Stillwater party band, "The Hickodelics", reunited to form the Rollin Phattys! The band features the songwriting collaboration of front man Ken Helton & guitarist Jeff Parker. Ken & Jeff have been working together as writers and studio mates since the early 1990s. Their sound can best be described as "Southern-fried blues, rock, & soul steeped in Tulsa Tradition.""If you were around the Oklahoma/Texas/Louisana music scenes in the 70's, 80's and 90's you might have heard these guys collectively and individually. These guys were an intricate part of the famed Stillwater Oklahoma Red Dirt Music scene during the 1990's from the ground floor up. They worked both in the studio and on the road with artists like The Hickodelics, Tom Skinner & Farmboy, Bob Childers, Medicine Show, Red Dirt Rangers, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland, The Great Divide, and many others. But above and beyond Red Dirt Americana, they have preformed many genres of music including their beloved branded Southern Fried Electric Blues, Rock, & Soul. They could be seen performing in Stillwater at Willie's Saloon, Eskimo Joe's, Mexico Joe's, The Stonewall, Washington St. Grill, JR Murphy's, Tumbleweeds, and the Wormy Dog, and after hours at the legendary Farm.
