| | Shine CD Operatica Discography of CDs
From the moment the beat strikes early on the first track, it's difficult not to equate Operatica with a pair of evocative dance-fusion producers ten years past, Enigma and Deep Forest. The songs on Shine are reliant on the same mishmash of mid-tempo trip-hop beats, acid house effects, and worldbeat textures (cribbed from Ireland to India) to drive them. This, the second volume in a series of dance/opera crossovers helmed by Operatica (the work of one Lord Vanger and "additional programmer" Aaron Jaffe), consists of a smattering of romantic pieces -- by Grieg, Bizet, and Debussy -- along with a pair of Persian folk tunes and several by Vanger himself, who feels compelled to list his dates "(1968-)" along with the other composers. Thanks mostly to the vocalists featured, however, many of these tracks succeed overall; the crystal tones of Ying Huang animate the opener, "Solvejg's Song" (even while the arrangement lags far behind), and Vanger himself displays considerable talents as a vocalist, with a pure high tenor that really does shine on "Standing on the Edge of the World" and "Under the Desert Sky." ~ John Bush

| | David Garrett CD (2009)
Shine CD music
$9.99 Feisty re-imaginings of beloved songs from the pop, folk, and classical canon make violinist David Garrett's self-titled album an unpredictable and joyous listen. Garrett--a former student of Itzhak Perlman--has remarkable control over his tone, guiding his violin to sound tremblingly sweet ("Nothing Else Matters"), bluesy and soulful ("Ain't No Sunshine"), jaunty ("Zorba's Dance"), and even aggressive and artfully harsh ("Thunderstruck"), a versatility that allows him to cover Metallica and traditional Hungarian folk dances with equal aplomb.
Personnel: David Garrett (violin); Mark Sheridan (guitar, flamenco guitar); Giorgio Serci, Robbie McIntosh (guitar); Paco Peńa (flamenco guitar); Samantha Rowe (cello); Ian On Awi Watson (accordion); Ray Vega (trumpet); John Haywood (piano, harpsichord); Jonathan Quarmby (piano); James Genus (double bass); Steven Wolf (drums); Thomas Dyani (percussion).

| | More Music From Braveheart CD (1997) Original Soundtrack
Shine songs
$15.35 The haunting bagpipes, a shiver of strings behind them...you can almost feel the cool fog rolling in from the sea, and across a Scottish field. A battlefield, in this case, in the year 1314. It was then that a band of half-starved, hopelessly outnumbered Scottish patriots fought for freedom at a place called Bannockburn. John Horner's soundtrack to "Braveheart," the Mel Gibson film about that epic struggle, is a lustrous, many-faceted, at times stirring piece of work. Even without the images from the film dancing through your head, Horner's themes have staying power and emotional substance. He maintains the feel of place throughout, but never relies too heavily on obvious instrumental cliches (the pipes, for instance, are used sparingly). No doubt, tracks like "The Battle of Stirling" will resonate a bit more if you've seen "Braveheart." That said, Horner's score has a rare quality: It is cinematic, but also enjoyable on its own as orchestral music.
