Georgia On My Mind album
$7.29 Twenty tracks from 1969-1973, the period of Tony Joe White's greatest success, including "Polk Salad Annie" and White's own version of his composition "Rainy Night in Georgia." Most of this is quality swamp rock with pop-soul-conscious production; on cuts like "High Sheriff of Calhoun Parrish," it sounds very much like he was trying to achieve a groove in the mold of Bobbie Joe Gentry's "Ode to Billie Joe." Sometimes he gets real down-home in a stomping backwoods blues style that makes him sound a little like a White counterpart to John Lee Hooker, as on "Stockholm Blues." If there's any criticism to be levied against this music, it's in its occasional lack of variety, White mining staple swamp rock boogie riffs for all they're worth. However, few, if any, performers and writers were as skilled as White in doing so, and he has a fine knack for sharp storytelling lyrics. ~ Richie Unterberger

Georgia On My Mind songs
$9.25 There's a down-home country tone to Tom T. Hall's The Magnificent Music Machine that both new listeners and longtime fans will find relaxing. Hall has a knack for slice-of-life story songs, from telling of the cold-hearted beauty who "left me to die, like a "'Fox on the Run'" to the mellower, more wryly humorous plaint of "Momma's Got the Catfish Blues." In between are tales of horse racing, with "Molly and Tenbrooks," hunting ("Fastest Rabbit Dog in ...

$12.99 Cult favorites Fred Williamson (BLACK CAESER) and Bo Svenson (WALKING STAR) star in this Italian knock-off of THE DIRTY DOZEN. Arrested for crimes against the army, five World War II vets escape when their prison convoy is attacked by the Germans. Caught behind enemy lines, and not looking forward to serving prison sentences in their own countries, they decide to fight their way to neutral Switzerland. This zoom-happy exploitation pic later inspired Quentin Tarantino's long-gestating World War II project of the same name.

$15.85 All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Classic Moods refers to a number of things -- classic songs, the classic small hard-bop group, the classic sound of jazz ballads. It's clear that Ernie Watts was out to recapture the spirit of his hero John Coltrane's exquisite Ballads, and what's surprising is how close he comes to fulfilling his goal. Working with pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist George Mraz and drummer Jimmy Cobb, Watts recaptures the classic sound of '50s small combos without ever sounding like a stodgy revivalist. That's because he's too concerned with feeling and fresh, vital improvisations to devote himself to painstaking re-creations of the past. Every musician in the group plays with passion, even during ...

Mississippi born Riley B. King began playing music on the streets of his native Indianola in the '40s, eventually moving to Memphis to pursue a career as a bluesman. He found a home as a DJ on legendary Memphis radio Station WDIA in the early '50s, a position he used to further his budding reputation as a guitarist/singer to be reckoned with. His on-air moniker, "the Beale Street Blues Boy" ultimately metamorphosed into his stage name. He spent the '50s cementing his legend as an energetic performer, playing with Johnny Ace and Bobby "Blue" Bland and on his own. His very modern, urban style was influenced not only by T-Bone Walker, but by jazz guitarist Charlie Christian. King's gestalt was miles away from the blues' rural beginnings, relying on witty, sophisticated lyrics and almost jazzy rhythms. His signature guitar style, as played on his trademark Gibson hollow-body "Lucille," combined quick vibrato with cutting, single-note lines and aggressively bent notes. His boisterous vocals, entertainment-value showmanship and gregarious personality made him beloved not just to blues aficionados, but to the larger pop audience.

| | B B King Live In Cook County Jail CD (1971) Remastered
Georgia On My Mind album
$8.49 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson at MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California.
B.B. King has long been known as a road warrior who regularly plays over 300 dates a year. One of his most noted and unusual gigs, LIVE AT COOK COUNTY JAIL, occurred on September 10, 1970. Performing before 2,117 inmates with minimum security, King took his "captive audience" through a set peppered with staples of his impressive canon. Backed by a punchy horn section and peppering the set with his trademark quick licks, King immediately won over the audience. Of course, one of the most enduring facets of a live B.B. King show is the neighborly relationship he quickly establishes with whoever might make up his audience. The nearly 10-minute version of "Worry, Worry, Worry" finds the King Of The Blues discussing relationships and matters of the heart whereas "Sweet Sixteen" and the medley of "3 O'Clock Blues" and "Darlin' You Know I Love You," are a spoken mini-tour of his early catalog. Forming a neat ...
