| | Stereo Sushi CD
No, Stereo Sushi isn't a collection of Japanese Shibuya-kei pop, though the curious will be forgiven for assuming from the kiddie-core graphics, fonts, and layout that there'll be plenty of Pizzicato 5 or Fantastic Plastic Machine inside. Instead, the basically unmixed two-disc set compiles the early-2000s sound of deep house: that slightly chilled, slightly clubby version of neo-disco that matches the freewheeling disco blueprint of Salsoul records. Mark Doyle, from the ubiquitous Hed Kandi family of compilations, oversees the set, selecting tracks from sympathetic labels like Distance, Om, King Street, Nervous, and Subliminal Soul. Stereo Sushi is a classic "background listening" record; highlights are difficult to choose, since each of these producers gets the sound down well, but few are able to transcend the jazzy, downtempo keys, chunky basslines, Latin percussion, and yearning vocals in attendance. Three do rise above the pack, however: Miguel Migs' remix of "Fall into You" by Soulstice, a remix of "My Precious Thing" by Llorca, and a tag-team reworking of Dido's "Hunter" featuring Francois Kevorkian and Faithless. ~ John Bush

Stereo Sushi album
$13.09 Back in March 2004 music magazine Mojo included Withers' fourth album on a list of "67 Lost Albums You Must Own." Whether 'Justments is indeed the stuff of legend remains debatable. Surely no holy grail like the similarly mentioned Cold Fact by Sussex labelmate Sixto Rodriguez, it seems at least unfairly ignored. Nothing here might be as compelling as "Grandma's Hands" or "I Can't Write Left-Handed," but there are plenty of melancholy reflections from a genuine soulman who came across more as a West coast singer/songwriter. Replacing the hired hands of his debut with former employees of Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band proved equally important in shaping Withers' identity. Not only had they been instrumental in creating a landmark with his second album Still Bill, follow-up Live at Carnegie Hall showed how easily they could replicate their unrestrained approach on-stage, performing quite a few tunes which hadn't yet appeared on a studio album. This experience further tightening a natural combination, the band was set for Withers' third studio album. The moody overtones of 'Justments suggest both band and singer might have suffered a ...
| | Eminem Relapse: Refill CDs (2009) Includes Bonus Tracks
Stereo Sushi CD music
$15.59 Eminem's expansion of his 2009 comeback Relapse is cleverly titled Refill, playing off the prescription pill artwork of the original album while offering precisely what it promises: another seven songs in the same vein as the original. Generally, these songs retain much of the carnivalesque horror show vibe of Relapse -- when Slim Shady raps about "Buffalo ...

$10.45 THE SLIM SHADY LP won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "My Name Is" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
You'll need a well-developed sense of humor to fully appreciate the debut of Eminem aka Slim Shady. Produced by hip-hop super-producer Dr. Dre and released on Dre's Aftermath Records, the album features an infectious lead single, "My Name Is," a winning mixture of alternative rock and rap. One listen will have you hooked on the chorus, but future plays will reveal the lyrical gymnastics that Eminem kicks out so effortlessly.
Obsessed with fantasies of sex, violence, drugs, and a general depraved indifference to life itself, Eminem's alter ego, Slim Shady, is constantly involved in a battle of good vs. evil leavened by a high degree of irony. Dre even drops in on an mind-blowing cameo playing the shoulder ...
