Super Furry Animals' fifth album, and their first since the implosion of former label Creation Records, 2002's RINGS AROUND THE WORLD is as just as sprawling as their earlier records. But where albums like FUZZY LOGIC and RADIATOR sometimes ... Full Descriptionsounded unfocused in the way they leapt from sunshiny psych-pop songs to electronic dance music flirtations, RINGS AROUND THE WORLD solidifies all of the group's various influences into a more easily digestible sound that plays to the group's melodic strengths. For example, the dreamy "Juxtaposed With U" blends '70s-style Philly soul strings with a loopy guitar-and-beatbox verse, and the title track mixes Stereolab's driving rhythm and vintage electronics with the album's most immediately catchy chorus. Wildly varied without being as muddled as some of their earlier releases, RINGS AROUND THE WORLD is one of Super Furry Animals' best efforts.
Exclusive U.S. edition features a 6 track bonus disc of material! Guests include Paul McCartney, John Cale (Velvet Underground) & Sean O'Hagen (High Llamas). A little too happy for my tastes. While some songs seam well thought out others are very bland and weak especially the opening track. This album would definitely be popular with people who frequent on LSD. Best interpertaion: ELO meets the Beach Boys

a band similar to this but much better: Beta Band. Have a similar sound but sound grounded in the present not in the 70's Submitted by a reviewer (s. florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A "throwback" classic! Rings Around The World is simply one of the catchiest "pop rock/prog rock" albums of the last 25 years. SFA are so underrated in North America. Haven't we learned anything since 1964, The Beatles and the British Invasion that followed? The U.K. has consistently produced the best rock bands around. Thoughtful lyrics, infectious beats, SINGERS ... not screamers and music that's FUN, FUN, FUN to listen to and sing along with over and over again. If you’re a Beatles fan or Pink Floyd fan ... do yourself a favour and pick this one up. The companion DVD is also well worth it. Stand out trax: Sidewalk Serfer Girl, Rings Around The World, It's Not The End Of The World?, Receptacle For The Respectable, Juxtaposed With U and Run Christian Run. Excellent I saw the Furries on their Rings tour and it was phenomenal. Think Radiohead/Pink Floyd/Beach Boys all in one, yet very distinctly original. This has become one of, if my my favorite albums. It changed the way I listen to music. Make sure you see them live, their albums don't do them justice... $9.99 Far too much attention has been focused on this album's tortured history; band makes weird album, label rejects it, band buys it back and puts it out a year later through another arm of the same corporation. For the record, wildly overexcited Radiohead comparisons aside, the album's not that weird--it merely ventures a bit further down the sonic-shambles roads explored on the band's previous two releases. As has been noted elsewhere, the most valid reference point for the occasional pop deconstructions of YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT is Big Star's THIRD/SISTER LOVERS, not Thom Yorke and company.
The most significant factor in this nominal weird-out is the presence of producer Jim O'Rourke, whose avant-rock tendencies ...

$21.45 We‘re an American-German BandPothead played their first live show in October 1991 in Berlin, Germany. Guitarist/vocalist Brad and bassist Jeff Dope, fellow Seattlites, arrived in Berlin as tourists that month. Drummer Sebastian Meyer, who was to join the band in February 1994, is from Olpe, near Cologne. Pothead's first record, USA (a collection of early demos), was released in 1993.It all began in early 1991 in Seattle. A few of us, friends in the local scene, were getting together to jam in the basement of our rented slacker-house at 717 Denny Way on Capitol Hill (now an apartment highrise). We were burned out on our puttering bands, but were rediscovering the joy of rocking thanks to those many Hefe Weizen-powered evenings. In July of 1991 we booked two four-hour sessions at Reciprocal recording studio in the Ballard district, hoping to capture some of that power on tape. Unfortunately, though we’d jammed plenty we hadn't really written any songs. As a result we wasted about half the first day trying to pull inspiration out of a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was meant to be in tribute to Bachman Turner Overdrive, one of our childhood fave's. We'd heard they always ate KY-fried in the studio. But we just got stomach aches.Maybe it had provided some help, because we somehow managed to piece together five tunes in the remaining hours of our session. We also came up with a band name. While listening to the rough takes we were also brainstorming for a name to write on the edge of our Ampex tape box. Something like Motörhead. After a time someone shouted Pothead! Pure chance, of course.Goin' to EuropeOnly two weeks later Brad and Jeff packed their entire belongings into a storage locker. They were going camping in Europe with two friends from Bonn, still Germany‘s capitol at the time. The girls picked them up at the Amsterdam airport in a VW Golf they had rented for their vacation. The original plan was to drive through Yugoslavia to Greece. But the war had broken out in Yugoslavia so they decided to risk France and Spain instead. We ran into a German punk band at a campsite in the Basque land. They had graffiti’d their band name, which included Accused, onto the side of their old Deutsche-Post van. The name caught our attention and we decided to strike up a conversation by asking if they had heard of the Seattle (an unknown village still) band „The Accused“. Anyway, we learned that they had packed their backline, a PA system and a generator into their van and were simply traveling around, setting up in parks or wherever and whenever they found an opportunity to play. We were convinced that touring would be the perfect way to begin establishing our new band. For months we‘d been discussing the practicality of touring in a land where hundreds of larger cities sat in close proximity to one another, in contrast to Seattle where you had to make a long and costly trip to get beyond Portland, Oregon. After almost three weeks of camping, ending in one night of excessive beer drinking at the Munich ...
