Too-hip rock types may have dismissed Daryl Hall and John Oates as pretty-boy pop-stars during their heyday in the '70s and '80s, but the term "blue-eyed soul" was practically invented for this duo, who took the sweet sounds of Motown and Philly International, added their own pop sheen and distinctive personalities, and turned out one perfect hit after another for an astonishing amount of time. From '70s classics like the sweet, winsome "Sara Smile" and the punchy, bratty "Rich Girl" to '80s gems such as the sensuous "One on One" and the jubilant, propulsive "You Make My Dreams," this compilation hits all the highest points in the group's career. Live versions of the epic soul stirrer "She's Gone" and insistently catchy "Kiss on My List," among others, sweeten the pot. The new recordings "Somebody Like You" and "Heartbreak Time" successfully combine the old H&O sound with something new, showing that these two very musical men are far from done.

This CD is excellent !!! The unreleased live versions of their hits make it worth it alone- but the two new songs are an added value. DO IT FOR LOVE is a great song and the new version of EVERYTIME YOU GO AWAY will blow your mind. This is a classic

You get what you pays for and this CD does so big time. Some live versions of the classics are as good as the studio versions technically and have some great soul vibes in the vocal delivery on stage that wasn't there in the original. Live Music the way it should be as good if not better than studio. Great. Loved it.

Hall and Oates Review
Although I am not a big Hall and Oates fan (don't own any of their previous recordings), this is a great compilation of their hits from way back when -- it's a nice bit of nostalgia and the new release shows them to be just as good as ever.
I recall that Daryl Hall once said he was the best singer ever -- and he is very good.
This is a perfect summer CD.

Hall & Oates' "Behind The Music Collection" is a cornucopia of greatest hits that ranges from their indelible 70s smashes such as "Sara Smile" and "Rich Girl" to their reigning dynasty in the 80s with "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)," "Maneater," "Out of Touch," and "Everything Your Heart Desires."
There are many hits that are conspicuoulsy absent from this collection such as "Private Eyes," "Family Man," "Method of Modern Love," and 90's hit: "Promise Aint Enough" but these hits are almost not missed at all due to a slue of live songs and previously unreleased material.
Live versions of "Kiss On My List" and "She's Gone" introduce the listener to the vibrant enthusiasm of Hall & Oates' critically acclaimed live performances. But no live performance is more transcendent than the new live recording of "Every Time You Go Away"--this 9 minute song will literally pick you up off your couch and compel you to dance around your living room!
The heart and soul of this collection is centered prominently in the last three tracks--all brand new songs recorded in 2001 and 2002. "Somebody Like You" is a Hall & Oates remake of a Daryl-Hall-solo tune. The song is haunting and emotions run true and deep. "Heartbreak Time" was produced by the same London-based team that helped resurect Cher's "Believe" to #1...in result, "Heartbreak Time" will bring you back to the days of the Temptations--music from which Hall & Oates were weaned. Potential for Hall & Oates' next big hit falls squarly on the shoulders of "Do It For Love"--a classic Hall & Oates tune with a contemporary sound. "Do It For Love" sums up Hall & Oates' life-philosophy in one splendid, toe-tapping, dance-motivating groove: "I won't do it for money, I won't do it for pride, I won't do it to please somebody else, if it don't feel right. But I'll do it for you (at least I'll try). I don't need any other reason than that I feel it deep inside...I'll DO IT FOR LOVE!"
