Avenged Sevenfold would develop and refine their metalcore sound on later releases, but 2001's SOUNDING THE SEVENTH TRUMPET, the band's debut, announced the arrival of a force to be reckoned with. The Southern California outfit's mix of straightforward melodic metal with extreme punk and death metal tendencies creates a sonic wallop that bludgeons from the opener "To End the Rapture" through each of its 13 tracks. The screams of vocalist M. Shadows, along with the thunderous rhythms and furious riffs, can the flay the skin, alternating with more melodic passages and harmonies. This is an early gem from one of the key players in the genre.

By the time Atreyu's 2002 debut full-length SUICIDE NOTES AND BUTTERFLY KISSES was released, they'd already built a devoted following in their native Orange County, California, with their polished yet punishing brand of metalcore. An EP, FRACTURES IN THE FACADE OF YOUR PORCELAIN BEAUTY, had established the band's sonic blueprint, and Atreyu reworked three songs from the EP to place ...

Sounding The Seventh Trumpet
$10.69 In the alternative metal field, there are plenty of bands offering a heaven/hell and melody/brutality sort of contrast -- bands that include, among many others, Hopesfall, From Autumn to Ashes, and the Postman Syndrome. One minute, they're being brutally ferocious; the next minute, they lighten the load and become more melodic. And that is exactly the type of approach that Trivium favors on Ember to Inferno. Throughout this CD, the Florida trio's 2003 lineup -- Matt Heafy on lead vocals and guitar, Brent Young on bass, and Travis Smith on drums -- fluctuates between metalcore ferocity and something more forgiving. Typically, a Trivium song will go from metalcore harshness ...
