Amos Milburn was born in Houston, TX, on April 1, 1927. After serving in the Navy during the Second World War, the young pianist began performing publicly in a style derived directly from his heroes Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. While leading a small band at San Antonio's Keyhole Club, Milburn was discovered by Lola Anne Cullum, a talent scout working for the Los Angeles-based Aladdin record label. Soon after hiring Milburn, Cullum would also sign and record a pair of fine bluesmen from Houston, Wilson "Thunder" Smith and Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins. Milburn was only 19 years old when he made his first records. This compilation documents everything he recorded between September 1946 and October 1947. As the musicians in his regular working band were considered too green to appear on records, Milburn was provided with a small backing ensemble composed of players whose names have since been forgotten, although tenor saxophonist Maxwell Davis was in charge of the group and is believed to have performed on the sides cut in 1947. The slow, soulful, and bluesy instrumental "Real Gone" is the greatest artistic achievement of the entire album. All of this action predates Milburn's big hit of 1948, "Chicken Shack Boogie," and serves as a fascinating prelude to this pianist's later work and all of the hot music he went on to inspire others to create. ~ arwulf arwulf

Roy Brown 1947-1949 CD  (2002)

1946-1947 album
CD $18.05
With his gospel-inflected vocals, full of melismatic swoops and sighs, and a penchant for speeded-up jump blues songs with strong sax lines, Roy Brown created the very template for early rock & roll in the late 1940s and early '50s. This first installment in Classics Records' chronological survey of Brown's recorded work includes both sides of his rare first single, "Deep Sea Diver" b/w "Bye Baby Bye," cut for the Houston independent Gold Star Records in 1947, and then moves on to feature his initial sides for the Braun Brothers' DeLuxe Records imprint, the first of which was the seminal "Good Rockin' Tonight," which Wynonie Harris turned into a huge hit with a cover version. Brown wrote nearly all of his material, and the nascent ...

Recorded in New York, New Orleans, and Atlanta between May 1953 and November 1954, Charles is heard in three different settings: solo, fronting a small combo with a horn section, and with a full orchestra. Few would dispute that this collection is the Holy Grail of blues harmonica. Like the other entries in Chess Records' HIS BEST series, the Little Walter compilation is beautifully selected, sequenced, remastered, and packaged. At 20 tracks, HIS BEST gives a satisfying, economical summary of Walter's genius, and defends his title as the king of blues harp men. As a member of Muddy Waters's band, and on his own, Walter was one of the architects of the original Chicago sound. His propulsive chording, high-leaning notes, inventive use of amplification (he used a close-up hand-held microphone and effects like distortion and echo), and endless stream of ideas expanded the possibilities of the harmonica. With ...

Recorded between 1970 and 1979. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Evren Goknar and Marty Wekser (Capitol Mastering, Los Angeles, California). With so many Kris Kristofferson collections featuring basically the same material already available, it's questionable why the compilers felt it was necessary to repackage these songs again into this 2001 disc. What's especially frustrating is as of this release, there still was not a comprehensive multi-label Kristofferson compilation. While the bulk of ...
