When the Goo Goo Dolls solidified their place in the pop mainstream with 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL, one of the casualties was frontman Johnny Rzeznik's marriage. For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set of songs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop. Lines like "How does it feel when you're out on your own/And now it's too late to come home" on the Pearl Jam-flavored "What A Scene" and "I'm torn in pieces/I'm blind and waiting for you" on the catchy and whip-smart "Big Machine" are self-explanatory. For more emotional turbulence, see the mandolin-soaked delicacy of "Sympathy" and the epic "Truth Is A Whisper" with its driven tempo and churning guitars.
Bassist Robby Takac claims a third of the songwriting credit on GUTTERFLOWER and proves to be as talented as his Rzeznik at crafting memorable cuts. Delivering the goods with a higher-pitched rasp than Rzeznik, Takac shines on the INXS pop-funk of "Up, Up, Up," soaring ear-candy "Smash" and punkier abandon of "Tucked Away." Cultivators of aggressive guitar-pop with an adult edge, The Goo Dolls once again score with the bittersweet bud that is GUTTERFLOWER.

Same thing, only different. While not as good as their breakthrough CDs of the past, "Gutterflower" is very listenable. The songs have a bit of a "been there, done that" feel to them, but in general, the CD was enjoyable.

Gutterflower album
$10.69 The Goos' third album was in part seen as their commercial step up, though in fact the real breakthrough didn't come along for a few more years. It's little surprise why there was more of a push for this album, though. If it wasn't as powerfully distinct as Nirvana's Nevermind, Hold Me Up is as much a product of '80s underground punk and indie (and dollops of bands like Cheap Trick) as its more famous counterpart. The Replacements Jr. tag that dogged the Goos in early years still has a connection here, unquestionably. But considering at that point Paul Westerberg was starting down his road toward ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls Superstar Car Wash CD (1993)
Gutterflower CD music
$7.09 The hard rock rawness of Buffalo's Goo Goo Dolls makes Superstar Car Wash an album that is high on amicable guitar riffs and attractive hooks, with an edge that never goes away. All the choruses are sandwiched perfectly between the crunching throttle ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls Boy Named Goo CD (1995)
Gutterflower music CDs
$9.75 All songs written by John Rzeznik or Goo Goo Dolls except "Disconnected" (Mann/Piranha/Secrist/Sinister) and "Slave Girl" (M. Blood/J. Jakimyszyn).
A BOY NAMED GOO shows that the Goo Goo Dolls have soaked up all the elements necessary to make them a great guitar band. The album's title clearly harkens back to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" and its narrator's search for the people who named him; but the Goo Goo Dolls aren't taking that path. They already know their past (straight-ahead post-punk), and A BOY NAMED GOO plots out their present.
With a smart-alec, bar-band approach reminiscent of the Replacements, the Goo Goo Dolls rage about being "Disconnected"--that "someone pulled the plug." They sound worried on "Long ...

| | Gov't Mule Life Before Insanity CD (2000) (Import) Germany
Gutterflower CD music
$9.75 In 1997, following a short period of splitting time between the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes left the former to concentrate full-time on the latter. With Haynes' rededication to the band, Mule went on to resurrect and expand upon the power-trio concept first pioneered by Cream and Mountain. Much like its predecessors, the Mule's fifth album, LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, continues to be yoked to leader Haynes' gruff vocals and formidable guitar playing.
This time around, the Mule wanders away from its blues-rock roots, ...
| | Elvis Presley Love Songs CD (1999)
Gutterflower music CDs
$9.39 This Australian import CD features 20 of the King's greatest love songs. From "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" to "Love Me Tender" to "Love Letters," Elvis's ballads are among some of his all-time best tracks.
Time-Life's The Elvis Presley Collection is a series of two-CD compilations grouping Presley recordings by various criteria. Love Songs has an obvious unifying theme, and among its 31 selections are most of Presley's best-known romantic ballads, including the Top Ten hits "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," "Love Me Tender," "Love Me," "Don't," "It's Now or Never," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?," "Surrender," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "The Wonder of You," as well as such Presley standards as "Always on My Mind" and the Kris Kristofferson compositions "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and "For the Good Times." One might quibble that "Suspicion" and "Suspicious Minds" don't quite fit the theme, both for their quick tempos and subject matter. And the compilers have treated the two discs separately, with each one running in rough chronological order from the 1950s to the '70s, ...
| | Kevin Tihista Don't Breathe A Word CD (2001)
Gutterflower songs
$22.35 Although at times overly derivative, Don't Breathe a Word starts out strong with the multi-layered "Just Not Enough." Tihista's vocals are at their alternately sweet and throatiest as he moans, "half of me is dying/and I just don't do anything to stop it," with a predilection for disappointment that is the album's common thread. The heartbreak-induced "Sucker" channels the likes of Brian Wilson's "Caroline, No" with ...
