When the Goo Goo Dolls solidified their place in the pop mainstream with 1998's DIZZY UP ... Full DescriptionTHE GIRL, one of the casualties was frontman Johnny Rzeznik's marriage. For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set of songs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop. Lines like "How does it feel when you're out on your own/And now it's too late to come home" on the Pearl Jam-flavored "What A Scene" and "I'm torn in pieces/I'm blind and waiting for you" on the catchy and whip-smart "Big Machine" are self-explanatory. For more emotional turbulence, see the mandolin-soaked delicacy of "Sympathy" and the epic "Truth Is A Whisper" with its driven tempo and churning guitars.
Bassist Robby Takac claims a third of the songwriting credit on GUTTERFLOWER and proves to be as talented as his Rzeznik at crafting memorable cuts. Delivering the goods with a higher-pitched rasp than Rzeznik, Takac shines on the INXS pop-funk of "Up, Up, Up," soaring ear-candy "Smash" and punkier abandon of "Tucked Away." Cultivators of aggressive guitar-pop with an adult edge, The Goo Dolls once again score with the bittersweet bud that is GUTTERFLOWER.
2002 release and follow-up to 98's 'Dizzy Up the Girl'. 13 tracks including 'Here Is Gone', 'Big Machine' & 'What A Scene'. Plus internet key to access exclusive Goo Goo Dolls material.
Goo Goo Dolls: Johnny Rzeznik (vocals, guitar); Robby Takac (bass, background vocals); Mike Malinin (drums).

Same thing, only different. While not as good as their breakthrough CDs of the past, "Gutterflower" is very listenable. The songs have a bit of a "been there, done that" feel to them, but in general, the CD was enjoyable.

$8.49 All songs written by John Rzeznik or Goo Goo Dolls except "Disconnected" (Mann/Piranha/Secrist/Sinister) and "Slave Girl" (M. Blood/J. Jakimyszyn).
A BOY NAMED GOO shows that the Goo Goo Dolls have soaked up all the elements necessary to make them a great guitar band. The album's title clearly harkens back to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" and its narrator's search for the people who named him; but the Goo Goo Dolls aren't taking that path. They already know their past (straight-ahead post-punk), and A BOY NAMED GOO plots out their present.
With a smart-alec, bar-band approach reminiscent of the Replacements, the Goo Goo Dolls rage about being "Disconnected"--that "someone pulled the plug." They sound worried on "Long Way Down," realizing that "I don't think I'll make it on my own." "Burnin' Up" offers another key to the Goo Goo Dolls' garage sound by adding a smidgeon of Husker Du (the Bob Mould guitar chimes and Grant Hart's melodic vocal sense are properly reproduced). But it's on the acoustic "Name" that the Dolls' own context emerges. The song complains about "growing up way too fast" in a culture where everything seems borrowed and "re-runs are our history."
This is what makes the Goo Goo Dolls admirable. They're thoroughly aware of the repetition within today's guitar-rock, and use only the good pieces to evaluate the present. A BOY NAMED GOO shows a band completely aware of their surroundings, and boasts some great guitars in the process.
Though they hailed from upstate New York, the Goo Goo Dolls began as a band enamored of the '80s Minneapolis sound of the ...
| | Goo Goo Dolls Dizzy Up The Girl CD (1998)
Gutterflower songs
$10.65 "Iris" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Black Balloon" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
On first hearing, the Goo Goo Dolls sound like the Replacements' distant cousins, full of trashy rock bravado tempered by intelligent, often tender lyricism and a penchant for combining ringing acoustic guitars with dirtier sounds for a rich sonic stew. In fact, DIZZY UP THE GIRL finds the Dolls moving further away from the Replacements sound than ever before, with a definite '90s influence to the proceedings. The group's main link to the Replacements (and to Paul Westerberg's main influence, Alex Chilton) is the man-child dichotomy played out over the course of the album. The youthful, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Gutterflower album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's ...
| | Gov't Mule Life Before Insanity CD (2000)
Gutterflower CD music
$9.55 In 1997, following a short period of splitting time between the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes left the former to concentrate full-time on the latter. With Haynes' rededication to the band, Mule went on to resurrect and expand upon the power-trio concept first pioneered by Cream and Mountain. Much like its predecessors, the Mule's fifth album, LIFE BEFORE INSANITY, continues to be yoked to leader Haynes' gruff vocals and formidable guitar playing.
This time around, the Mule wanders away from its blues-rock roots, embracing a creative expansion marked by odd time signatures and more of a low-key delivery. Haynes' soulful vocals are an especially appropriate match for the haunting "Tastes Like Wine" and the goosebump-inducing title track. Elsewhere, the Mule welcomes such guests as Ben Harper on the meandering "Lay Your Burden Down" and harmonica player Hook Herrera on the gnarly "I Think You Know What I Mean." Although most of LIFE is ...
