While not that well-known outside of hardcore jazz fan circles, the impact of Jack Teagarden on the trombone was similar to that of his friend and contemporary Louis Armstrong on the trumpet. In the hot jazz, swing, and/or traditional/New Orleans scenes from the late 1920s all through the `50s, Teagarden was a pivotal figure. He sang in a relaxed, soulful drawl and his trombone had a big, wide, joyous tone. He was also in a band with Armstrong in the `40s but this set draws upon Big Tea's recordings with other ensembles (large and small) from 1928-1940, made for Columbia Records and its associated labels. As a bonus, Fat Waller sings and plays on some of these tunes.
