Bug finds Dave Davies looking back, returning to a comfortable, familiar sound. No, not the garage rock of early Kinks records, nor the precious English pop that marked his initial foray into solo recordings in the mid-'60s. No, he's returning to the album-oriented hard rock that marked the Kinks' Low Budget and his solo albums from the early '80s -- which is only appropriate, since it is his first album of new material in nearly 20 years. Even so, it's startling that apart from the clean contemporary production, the album feels like it could have been released the same year as Chosen People, but once that shock wears off, it's easy to appreciate Bug as a real solid collection of arena-rattlers, earnest mid-tempo rockers, and ballads. There is the occasional change-up -- the surf guitars on "The Lie!," for instance -- but this is pretty much a straight-ahead rock record, fueled by good guitar playing and very sincere, soul-baring lyrics. This is probably the purest album Dave Davies has yet released, the one closest to capturing his personality -- there are no commercial considerations to the production or the material, the performances are sharp, the songs are solid. Yes, it's primarily for the converted die-hards at this point, but that was always the case with Dave's solo albums -- and those who still pay attention will find Bug a worthy comeback. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Robinella & the CC String Band rippled the pond in 2003 with her band's self-titled Columbia debut. It offered the sound of a band of crack musicians fronted by a singer whose voice was chameleon-like in its ability to evoke country, bluegrass, pop, and jazz frameworks with sultry seductiveness, murky as smoke and yet alternately clear as water and fresh as the morning. The album showed promise, and delivered. Columbia was hoping for something akin to Alison Krauss' success. It didn't happen. This time out, Robinella Contreras shows up on the adventurous Dualtone label. She still has the CC String Band (named after her husband, Cruz Contreras), but only her name appears on the label. For those who were charmed by the last recording's flirtation with pop as it rooted itself in traditional country and bluegrass structures, this will come as a bit of a shock. For those uninitiated, Solace for the Lonely is a breath of clean sweet air. This is a pop record. Period. It's mature, sophisticated, elegant, heartbreakingly lovely, and poetic. There are songs about sex, spirituality, and love both pure and impure, and Jesus himself is called upon with confidence and joy. Country and bluegrass elements are everywhere present, but more as references than sources. What Robinella and Cruz -- who plays mandolin, Fender Rhodes, guitar, and piano -- have come up with is the recording they've been striving to make since their first album went to tape. Thanks to producer Doug Lancio (who understands balance and how to make anything sound like it was recorded in the living room), fiddles, acoustic guitars, upright bass, drums, and percussion keep the set from wandering too far afield from the roots. No matter what's happening, the feel is that this music is made from the ground up, with its roots firmly placed in Southern soil. "Press On" could have been produced by Daniel Lanois. A meditation on death and redemption, its whispering keyboards, muted tom-toms, sparse piano, and electric guitars underscore the poignancy in Robinella's lyric. The very next cut, "Down the Mountain," a modern spiritual, is a country tune defined by Cruz's mandolin, fiddle, and slowly strolling electric guitars. Longtime Aerosmith fans are likely to quibble about the set list here. How to pare down one of rock's all-time greatest and longest-running rock bands to 18 songs? Even so, 2006's DEVIL'S GOT A NEW DISGUISE: THE VERY BEST OF AEROSMITH does an admirable job, offering a single-disc crash course in the group's biggest and best-known tunes.
Ranging from the their 1970s heyday throughout their astonishing late '80s comeback and beyond, DEVIL'S plays like a feel-good hard-rock radio revival. Old-schoolers will be happy to find the staples--"Dream On," "Walk This Way," and "Sweet Emotion"--while second-generation Aerosmith fans will find blockbuster MTV fare like "Cryin'" and "Crazy." The band's patented boogie shuffle is accounted for on "Back in the Saddle" and "Rag Doll," among others. Two new tracks, one of which gives the album its title, are also included.
Originally decried by critics as an American rip-off of the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith blew these criticisms away by going on to become the biggest and best hard rock band of the '70s. Fronted by funky and fast-talking Steven Tyler, Aerosmith was anchored by the rock-solid rhythm tandem of Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer, while guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were the instrumental gunslingers of the band.
