Another Monday
$14.54 Based on title alone, it would seem that SOUTHERN VOICE picks up on the harder country edges of LET IT GO, but that's not the case: this is Tim McGraw's rockiest album yet, opening with a slow, spacy crawl called "Still" that would not be out of place on a record by a U2 knockoff and taking the occasional detour to Nickelback territory on the Chad Kroeger co-written "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You." That tune bristles with Kroeger's barely veiled, unwitting hostility, something that the big-hearted McGraw doesn't wear well and it's something he wisely side-steps on the rest of the record, choosing to mine a sentimental, meditative vein, musing on major changes in his life and wondering what will happen after he's gone. Such big themes fit both the big, atmospheric rock sounds and the reflective acoustic ballads well, creating an inward vibe that is occasionally punctuated by a rocker, like the laundry list of great Southern ...
| | Rod Stewart Soulbook CD (2009)
Another Monday
$11.18 Continuing his stroll through pop's backpages, Rod Stewart moves on from "The Great Rock Classics of Our Time" and dives into the SOULBOOK, shorthand for all the great Motown and soul songs that still are in heavy rotation on oldies radio well into the new millennium. Rod doesn't spend much time with the soul and blues singers so influential on him, choosing instead to run through a bunch of Motown hits - a full six of the 13 songs here are from the Motor City - adding a couple of smooth soul hits from the early '70s, plus Chuck Jackson & Maxine Brown's "Let It Be Me" which gives him an opportunity to duet with Jennifer Hudson. All this is firmly within Stewart's wheelhouse.

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Another Monday
$17.58 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained with them through the '00s and have braved all the difficult but ultimately rewarding efforts that came with it. To them, LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA is the big payoff and an instant classic. ...
| | Timothy B Schmit Expando CD (2009)
Another Monday
$11.14 Timothy B Schmit launched his solo career late - in 1984, after the Eagles disbanded and right in the thick of the era of shiny, synthesized production. Schmit released three solo albums, all big and glossy, between 1984 and 1991, then reunited with the Eagles in '94, so he never quite had a chance to record an album as relaxed and natural as 2009's EXPANDO. Ditching all the sheen, but not professional ...

Another Monday
$17.09 "Let's have a hand for John Lawler, a great guitar player." jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson "I wish all my students could hear John play. He does things that just can't be taught." World renown classical guitarist and columnist for 'Guitar Player Magazine', Benjamin Verdery John Lawler has been performing in and around the Chicago area for over twenty years. His unique instrumental style appeals to musicians and music lovers of all types. In 1989 Lawler was one of only eight guitarists from around the world chosen to perform his original instrumental compositions at the prestigious American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival. This festival has featured performances by such guitarists as Leo Kottke, Chet Atkins and Tuck Andress. Lawler was personally invited by world renown classical guitarist and columnist for Guitar Player Magazine, Benjamin Verdery to perform at Mr. Verdery's master class in Chicago. He has performed with Sonia Dada lead singer Paris Delane and has opened for jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. His debut CD, '1743', combines instrumental and vocal music that describe some very personal journeys that we all go through sooner or later. 'Angel Cafe', features the haunting voice of Chicago Rose as the counterpart to the suffering patron in the song. Lawler's sense of humor shows itself throughout the CD, often during some of the darkest moments. But the joy in such pieces as '80 West', 'Girl on a Bicycle' and 'Wheels' leave you with an, "Everything will be OK." feeling. All tracks on the '1743' CD were written and arranged by John Lawler except, 'Wheels', which was written by Jimmy Torres and arranged for fingerstyle guitar by Muriel Anderson.'Screen Magazine' writes about Lawler's '1743' CD, in their December 1, 2003 (Volume 24, No. 24) issue:'The sound can be described as jazz, although the mix of folk and R and B combined with the absence of drums brings a boogie feel to the album.'Lawler uses ...
