Recorded in London, England in 1966. Includes liner notes by Colin Harper.
This is the famed second solo album from seminal British folk guitarist and former Pentangle member John Renbourn. ANOTHER MONDAY contains three songs featuring the shimmering vocals of Pentangle chanteuse Jacqui McShee, "Lost Lover Blues," "Can't Keep Crying," and "Nobody's Fault But Mine." This 12-song album is a folk-rock essential.
Renbourn's second album was very much in character with many of the records he would release throughout the rest of his career, the only difference being that his approach here was perhaps somewhat more tentative. The guitar playing is not tentative; it's excellent folk-blues, virtuosic but full of heart and imagination, and open to other influences from jazz and world music, though not as much so as he would be in many subsequent efforts. The vocals (when he takes them; some tracks are instrumental) are more perfunctory, but they don't detract from the performances. His inclination toward early music is evident on "Ladye Nothinge's Toye Puffe" and "One for William," the latter of which also features oboe. More typically, though, he drifted into the blues idiom, two of the standouts being his interpretation of the oft-covered "I Know My Babe" (more frequently titled "I Know You Rider" when recorded by other artists) and his bottleneck playing on "Nobody's Fault but Mine." For Pentangle fans, the album is especially interesting for the recording debut of Jacqui McShee as accompanying vocalist on three numbers, although her singing is far more subordinate and less assertive than it would be in Pentangle. The album's biggest flaw, actually, is its short running time of a mere 28 minutes, with seven of the 12 pieces clocking in under the two-minute barrier. The 2002 CD reissue on Castle/Sanctuary adds lengthy historical liner notes by Colin Harper. ~ Richie Unterberger

Another Monday album
$27.45 CAPTAIN AND ME found the Doobie Brothers boasting three strong vocalists, two expert guitarists, and a brace of rhythmic drummers, refining a sound that crossed AM pop-rock, soul-tinged R&B, country-folk, jazzy gospel, and strong musicianship. The result burst the band into national prominence. Traces of Moby Grape, whom the group adored, can be heard in their vibrant harmonies and flowing hooklines, but THE CAPTAIN AND ME showed an act of singular purpose.
The effervescent urgency propelling the percolating groover "Long Train Running" and the leaner rock of "China Grove" into the US singles charts is apparent on every selection. In addition to the band's gorgeous layered harmonies and twin guitar arpeggios, THE CAPTAIN AND ME features the band's strongest and most consistent set of songs. Patrick Simmons's mellow, country-rock numbers, such as "South City Midnight Lady" and "Clear As the Driven Snow," abut Tom Johnson's rockers, like the majestic title track. In short, this record defines the classic sound that would make the Doobie Brothers one of the most popular and commercially successful bands of the '70s, and it still stands--arguably--as their finest moment.

| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Another Monday CD music
$6.49 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.

| | Lady Gaga Fame CD (2008)
Another Monday songs
$9.99 The times were crying out for a pop star like Lady GaGa -- a self-styled, self-made shooting star, one who mocked the tabloid digital age while still wanting to wallow in it -- and one who's smart enough to pull it all off, too. That self-awareness and satire were absent in the pop of the new millennium, where even the best of the lot operated only on one level, which may be why Lady GaGa turned into such a sensation in 2009: everybody was thirsty for music like this, music for and about their lives, both real and virtual. To a certain extent, the reaction to The Fame may have been a little too enthusiastic, with GaGa turning inescapable sometime in the summer of 2009, when she appeared on countless magazine covers while both Weezer and DAUGHTRY covered "Pokerface," the rush to attention suggesting that she was the second coming of Madonna, a comparison GaGa cheerfully courts and one that's accurate if perhaps overextended. Like the marvelous Madge, Lady GaGa ushers the underground into the mainstream -- chiefly, a dose of diluted Peaches ...

Another Monday music CDs
$17.09 "Let's have a hand for John Lawler, a great guitar player." jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson "I wish all my students could hear John play. He does things that just can't be taught." World renown classical guitarist and columnist for 'Guitar Player Magazine', Benjamin Verdery John Lawler has been performing in and around the Chicago area for over twenty years. His unique instrumental style appeals to musicians and music lovers of all types. In 1989 Lawler was one of only eight guitarists from around the world chosen to perform his original instrumental compositions at the prestigious American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival. This festival has featured performances by such guitarists as Leo Kottke, Chet Atkins and Tuck Andress. Lawler was personally invited by world renown classical guitarist and columnist for Guitar Player Magazine, Benjamin Verdery to perform at Mr. Verdery's master class in Chicago. He has performed with Sonia Dada lead singer Paris Delane and has opened for jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. His debut CD, '1743', combines instrumental and vocal music that describe some very personal journeys that we all go through sooner or later. 'Angel Cafe', features the haunting voice of Chicago Rose as the counterpart to the suffering patron in the song. Lawler's sense of humor shows itself throughout the CD, often during some of the darkest moments. But the joy in such pieces as '80 West', 'Girl on a Bicycle' and 'Wheels' leave you with an, "Everything will be OK." feeling. All tracks on the '1743' CD were written and arranged by John Lawler except, 'Wheels', which was ...
