After early singles "Braggin' Writes" and "Longevity" earned J-Live a spot in the Source's Unsigned Hype column and inclusion on DJ Premier's NY REALITY CHECK 101 compilation, the then-SUNY student was heralded among underground heads as the next big thing. Recorded between 1995 and '99 while he earned his degree, worked as a public school teacher in Brooklyn, and collaborated with big-name producers like Prince Paul, Pete Rock, and Premier, J-Live's debut LP was shelved due to label complications until 2001. An entertaining and heartfelt effort from start to finish, THE BEST PART proves the charismatic lyricist a master of the concept joint, as he flips an extended metaphor on "Vampire Hunter J," comes abstract with head-scratching contradictions on "Yes!," and spins a circular commentary on the trappings of the rap industry on "Them That's Not."

5 stars I'm Speechless
This is what true hip hop is all about. Whenever you listen to this cd, it has replay value. J-Live talks about real life, not jewels, chicks, and cars. We need more true artists like this and avoid the frauds.

5 stars This CD is a CLASSIC!
I could listen to this CD for a while! This is how Hip Hop Should sound like for real. All the songs are hot in there own right. "Don't Play" is HOOOT, J-Live raps:"Spittin around tight wisdom making you think, If you around light sweetheart you can reflect' Don't put it down cause you need art you can respect". And "YES!" WOW J-Live raps:"Don't you see, my mentality is sort of like the boomerang effect, Over your head, but hit you in the back of your neck, F***ing with Live, who wins? What the **** you expect? That's like your girl tossing your S***d to get your respect". And then comes "Them thats not" weeeeeellll lets just say that song shows the skill he has on the mic. I am telling you all the songs on side A are Classic!. On side B the first song the "Get the third", This is another song thats hot! J-Live raps in the Chorus: " Imma tell ya like this, you can get the third, eye or the leg or the finger if preferred, I know what's on ya mind so sis ya need to say the word Eye or the Leg or the Bird...". In the title track "The best part" DJ Premier is on the beat...need I say more...J-Live raps:"Ten years, ten crates and ten rhyme books later My history, daily renewed on it's equator, Supreme mathematics is now the translator, As the stakes and the skills and the love became greater...". And the last song "Epilogue", is a GREAT way to end this CD. I could do this all day but I want my Review to say on the site (knowing CDU they dont like long reviews) so just GET THIS CD TOOODDDDAAAYYYYYYYYY, and support true HIP HOPPPPPPP!!!!!

Diamond Stunts, Blunts And Hip Hop CD  (1992)

Best Part album
CD $7.49  4.3 stars Audio Samples
Diamond D had quietly provided some exciting production work and made strides within the rap music industry and community throughout the early '90s, but his name didn't become immediately recognizable until his classic guest appearance rapping on A Tribe Called Quest's "Show Business" ("Take it from Diamond/It's like mountain climbing/When it comes to rhyming/You gotta put your time in"), off their masterful second album, The Low End Theory. Even amid vintage verses by such lauded hip-hop company as Tribe's Q-Tip and Phife and Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar and Sadat X, something about Diamond D's forthright and rock-solid, but totally laid-back, style stood out. Hip-hop heads waiting to hear more from him were rewarded with a veritable wealth of treasures when Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop, Diamond D's debut album, was released the following year. The album instantly became -- and remains -- something of an underground masterpiece. Stunts is a hugely sprawling, amorphous thing. Nearly 70 minutes would generally seem far too long for a hip-hop album ...

This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. PeteStrumentals follows Jay Dee's Welcome 2 Detroit as the second offering in BBE's producer spotlight "Beat Generation" series. If you approach Pete Rock's joint as a song-oriented pop album, you may feel disappointed. Only two tracks ("Cake" and "Nothin' Lesser - Jamie's Mix") feature MCs and the repetitive, consistently mid-tempo beats get somewhat monotonous by the end of most tracks. If you approach the album as a radical work of sonic architecture, you may also feel disappointed, since Rock's relatively old-school sensibility isn't likely to make you hear music in a completely new way. But if you approach PeteStrumentals on its own terms -- as a laid-back collection of atmospheric beats ideal for late-night ...

CD $14.19  Audio Samples
This is an Enhanced audio CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. New York's premier alternative band has been releasing "experimental" material on the sly on its private label, SYR, for a few years now. But this fourth release, a homage to a handful of highly influential experimental composers such as John Cage, Cornelius Cardew, and Pauline Oliveros, qualifies as a major Sonic Youth album. There's formless experimental music and then there's formless experimental music. This bona fide modernist rock & roll band knows the idiom so well and has been playing so well together for so long that the group's finely honed guitar textures (and familiar voices) make for ...

Shearwater
Martin Carthy Shearwater CD  (1972) Bonus Track; Japan; Mini LP Sleeve

Best Part CD music
CD $41.89
Exclusive Japanese limited edition digitally remastered reissue of this 1972 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. 10 tracks including 'I Was A Young Man', 'Outlandish Knight', 'Banks Of Green Willow' and more. Strange. 2006. Martin Carthy cut this solo album in 1971, immediately after he exited Steeleye Span following two albums with them, Please to See the King and Ten Man Map. The material is very spare, featuring Carthy and his guitar alone (except on "Betsy Bell and Mary Gray," and where Steeleye Span alumnus Maddy Prior appears on vocals), or his voice alone, and his approach is very studied and deliberative here, as though reveling in the fact of singing and playing alone for the first time in several years. Some of the material is rather dark-hued in terms of story, most notably "The Banks of Green Willow" (a song best known in its classical adaptations by various composers), "Lord Randall," and "He Called for a Candle," and "Famous Flower of Serving Men," all very grim stories -- even "Outlandish Knight," in which the would-be female victim of the title character turns the tables, is pretty dark. Only "John Blunt" features ...
