| | J-Live Best Part CD J-Live Discography of CDs
(7 Customer Reviews)
After early singles "Braggin' Writes" and "Longevity" earned J-Live a spot in the Source's Unsigned Hype column and inclusion on DJ Premier's NY REALITY CHECK 101 compilation, the then-SUNY student was heralded among underground heads as the next big thing. Recorded between 1995 and '99 while he earned his degree, worked as a public school teacher in Brooklyn, and collaborated with big-name producers like Prince Paul, Pete Rock, and Premier, J-Live's debut LP was shelved due to label complications until 2001. An entertaining and heartfelt effort from start to finish, THE BEST PART proves the charismatic lyricist a master of the concept joint, as he flips an extended metaphor on "Vampire Hunter J," comes abstract with head-scratching contradictions on "Yes!," and spins a circular commentary on the trappings of the rap industry on "Them That's Not."

I'm Speechless This is what true hip hop is all about. Whenever you listen to this cd, it has replay value. J-Live talks about real life, not jewels, chicks, and cars. We need more true artists like this and avoid the frauds. Submitted by Plummah (Montclair, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This CD is a CLASSIC! I could listen to this CD for a while! This is how Hip Hop Should sound like for real. All the songs are hot in there own right. "Don't Play" is HOOOT, J-Live raps:"Spittin around tight wisdom making you think, If you around light sweetheart you can reflect' Don't put it down cause you need art you can respect". And "YES!" WOW J-Live raps:"Don't you see, my mentality is sort of like the boomerang effect, Over your head, but hit you in the back of your neck, F***ing with Live, who wins? What the **** you expect? That's like your girl tossing your S***d to get your respect". And then comes "Them thats not" weeeeeellll lets just say that song shows the skill he has on the mic. I am telling you all the songs on side A are Classic!. On side B the first song the "Get the third", This is another song thats hot! J-Live raps in the Chorus: "
Imma tell ya like this, you can get the third, eye or the leg or the finger if preferred, I know what's on ya mind so sis ya need to say the word
Eye or the Leg or the Bird...". In the title track "The best part" DJ Premier is on the beat...need I say more...J-Live raps:"Ten years, ten crates and ten rhyme books later
My history, daily renewed on it's equator, Supreme mathematics is now the translator, As the stakes and the skills and the love became greater...". And the last song "Epilogue", is a GREAT way to end this CD. I could do this all day but I want my Review to say on the site (knowing CDU they dont like long reviews) so just GET THIS CD TOOODDDDAAAYYYYYYYYY, and support true HIP HOPPPPPPP!!!!!

$10.35 The double CD collection LOST & FOUND brings together two rarely heard full albums Pete Rock produced in the mid 1990s--CENTER OF ATTENTION with his group I.N.I. (featuring MCs Grap Luva, Rob-O, and Meccalicious) and THE ORIGINAL BABY PA, a record featuring an otherwise unknown lyricist called Deda. The I.N.I. project produced a few underground favorites like "Fakin' Jax" and "Microphonist Wanderlust" as well as a choice collaboration with Q-Tip and the Large Professor, while THE ORIGINAL BABY PA features some of the cleanest, ...
| | Masta Killa Made In Brooklyn CD (2006)
Best Part
$10.99 On MADE IN BROOKLYN, hip-hop heads get a chance to see just how far Masta Killa has come as an MC. Since his first appearance on "Da Mystery of Chessboxin," Killa was noted for his stylistic similarities to the GZA. From the late '90s on, his flow has evolved into one of the most understated deliveries in hip-hop--a chillingly straightforward minimalist monotone. MADE IN BROOKLYN is a solid effort, thanks largely to participation from a slew of super-producers (including ...

$14.19 This is an Enhanced audio CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
New York's premier alternative band has been releasing "experimental" material on the sly on its private label, SYR, for a few years now. But this fourth release, a homage to a handful of highly influential experimental composers such as John Cage, Cornelius Cardew, and Pauline Oliveros, qualifies as a major Sonic Youth album. There's formless experimental music and then there's formless experimental music. This bona fide modernist rock & roll band knows the idiom so well and has been playing so well together for so long that the group's finely honed guitar textures (and familiar voices) make for a surprisingly revealing addition to the mix. These are no musical amateurs. Cage's music in particular demands a kind of haiku-like perfect placement of musical elements and the band demonstrates on no less than three tracks that it knows where to put what and when. Even Steve Reich's "Pendulum Music", a composition for a swinging, feedback-prone microphone and speakers seems somehow sweetly melodic in the loving hands of these millennial kids.
