Strictly a Blink-182 side project (featuring that band's guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker), Box Car Racer doesn't stray too far from addressing the needs and concerns of the "other" band's core teen fanbase. Choosing to leave behind the toilet humor and skate-punk swagger normally associated with Blink, this outing instead goes down the road of vulnerability and insecurity that makes up the dark side of adolescence. Not surprisingly, Box Car Racer's stylistic hard-wiring features plenty of harmonies, prickly riffs, and pounding rhythms that come to the fore on the funky "And I," the hard-charging time changes of the opening "I Feel So," and the raging hardcore of "My First Punk Song."

Balancing out all this aggression are numbers where DeLonge swaps his electric guitar for an acoustic; heartfelt proclamations of love ("There Is") and the realization of life's fragility ("Letters To God"). Rounding out this self-titled debut are guest spots by Rancid's Tim Armstrong and A New Found Glory's Jordan Pundik (a chiming "Cat Like Thief"), and Blink bandmate Mark Hoppus ("Elevator"). BOX CAR RACER turns out to be an interesting visit to Blink-182's emerging serious side.

5 stars Delonge At His Best
I love Blink 182, but I'm not sure about their new stuff. I don't like Angels & Airwaves, but I love Box Car Racer. It's just like Blink's turning point in changing, the songs are more mature but they still have the playful catchy sounds which Blink's older stuff had. A must buy for a blink fan. If it was an actualy blink album it wouild be the best one.

5 stars ausom
this is an ausom album, cant stop listening to it! I feel so-8/10-good song, gets a "single" feel after a little while All Systems Go-8/10-good song, but nothing to make you want to press repet. Watch the world-8/10-good song that sets the true mood of this album Tiny Voices-10/10-great lyrics ausom song, proves all emo dosent have to be slow Cat Like Theif-7/10-Has Tim Armstrong from rancid doing guest vocals, but he just dosent seem needed for the song. And I-5/10-worse song on album, just dosent do much, dosent stick out Letters to God-8/10-good song, gets repatitive My First Punk song-7/10-sorta turns the mood around, but still good Sorrow-20/10-best song on album There is-10/10-2nd best song on album, very hopefull The End with you-10/10-ausom faster song Elevator-10/10-ausom lyrics, and has mark from b182 instrumental-7/10-pretty kewl

5 stars very good cd
yes just the chord progressions and two guitars in this band gave it that full sound and then with the bass helping to place the unknown genuine beats of travis barker-worlds greatest drummer- makes this cd awesome there is a song on here for everyone the lyrics are magical and puts anyone in a mood of relating themselves to the songs all in all a great cd with good guitar bass and drum riffs that are one of a kind great cd

Abandoning his former band's jokey pop-punk for a sound made up of equal parts post-punk grandeur and new wave shimmer, Blink-182's Tom Delonge started Angels and Airwaves with the mission to make music that was as big and important as U2 or Echo and the Bunnymen. He's one step closer with the impressive new I-EMPIRE. Opener "Call to Arms" is just ...

Additional personnel includes: Robert Smith (vocals); Ken Andrews (various instruments); Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., Jon Morrical (keyboards). In the world of emo and pop-punk, 2003 not only found Blink 182 qualifying for the early bird special, but the creators of a self-titled outing that represents a big step in musical maturity for a band best known for serial nudity and a jokey, skate-punk attitude. Rest assured, this trio hasn't lost its taste for serious riffing and catchy-as-all-get-out harmonies, as evidenced by the thumping "Go," the jittery "Stockholm Syndrome," and the anthemic "Easy Target." For the most part, however, Blink 182 has cast ...

Older and more successful but no less fascinated by the same things as their adolescent fan base (toilet humor, sex, and awkward social situations), Mark, Tom and Travis greet 2001 with another platter's worth of chugging guitar riffs, infectious hooks and plenty of moxie. The album opens with the sequel to the last cut on ENEMA OF THE STATE. "Anthem Part II" is a generational rant focusing on the hopelessness felt by teens ...

First Offense
Corey Hart First Offense CD  (1984)

Box Car Racer music CDs
CD $10.49  3.5 stars
Canadian pop singer Corey Hart's first album from 1983 includes the hit "Sunglasses at Night" and "At the Dance." Corey Hart's debut album encompasses much of the '80s pop sound, namely with "Sunglasses at Night," an instant classic with its distinctive melody and catchy chorus. Often considered a one-hit wonder, Hart was a staple act in regular rotation on radio and MTV throughout the '80s with nine Top 40 Billboard hits and over ten million records sold. Many say 1984 was the pinnacle for '80s music, and for Hart this release came to define his sound. With a distinctive Canadian accent he stood out even with what was sometimes indistinguishable music. All the cliched '80s sounds are here in full force, from the brooding saxophone, the bratty guitar solo, the snotty background vocalists, and the catchy keyboard riffs. Hart, though, is obviously impassioned about the part that he plays. Constantly striving to raise many of his lyrics above the meter, he can come across as clumsy when he tries too hard. Where Hart succeeds is when he allows the hooks to catch. The tragic lovelorn stadium ballad appears with "It Ain't Enough," another ...

Plague Soundscapes
Locust Plague Soundscapes CD  (2003)

Box Car Racer album
CD $10.69  4 stars Audio Samples
Plague Soundscapes is the Locust's first release for Anti, the Epitaph offshoot that includes among its intellectually superior ranks Tom Waits, Eddie Izzard, and Buju Banton. Have these respected dinner guests encouraged the Locust to serve up something less severe for dinner? Of course not. Plague Soundscapes is a churning miasma of sonic goo, a grindcore steam shovel with an insatiable appetite for shock and awe. Twenty-six-second bursts of tinfoil-biting noise molt into cohesive songs. Cheeky titles like "The Half-Eaten Sausage Would Like to See You in His Office" and "Priest With the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Get Out of My Bed" disguise tightly wound arrangements that include insanely intricate drumming, assaulting keyboard squiggles, fantastic tag-team screams, and reams of razor-wire guitar. It only takes 21 minutes for this noise blanket to fully cocoon the listener, but a few more to really figure out what's going on inside. Plague Soundscapes never takes its knee off your chest, which will deter many a potential fan. There are no ballads here, no forays into proto-disco or industrial beatmaking. The closest it comes to a smoke break is the random electro noise loop ending "Anything Jesus Does I Can Do Better." Instead of sussing out the road to accessibility -- and maligning its artfully crafted weird science project along the way -- the Locust dredges the sluiceway between grind and noise, bringing brutal social comment to the surface and putting a big bitch slap on tradition-minded metal. It's ...
