Recorded The Corner Hotel Richmond, Victoria, Australia on June 13, 2001.

What happens when a group with only one studio album out releases a live CD? Most of the set list is taken from the previous effort. That's what happens with Live From Oz, but strangely that doesn't prevent the CD from being very good. Recorded on June 13, 2001, in Melbourne, Australia (the hometown of drummer Virgil Donati), it packs tons of energy. The tunes gain a tri-dimensional life that the crystal-clear exactitude of the studio flattened out. The trio of Derek Sherinian, Tony MacAlpine, and Donati was complemented for this tour by Dixie Dregs bassist Dave LaRue. The unit is ultra tight and each musician is virtuosic in his own right, yet the music gels effortlessly. "Europa," "Warfinger," and "Inside Black" are given boost charges, but the fans will be looking out for the pieces that weren't on Universe. The opener, "Ignotus Per Ignotium," feels a bit empty (it will reach a fuller stage on the group's next studio album, Moonbabies). The real treat is the complete rendition of the three-part "Atlantis," introduced on Sherinian's solo album, Planet X (out of which grew the present band). Closer to prog rock in essence, it is given an exciting face-lift. If you already have Universe, think twice before getting this release. But the quality of the performance is worth your money. ~ François Couture

4 stars Dead-On
It's amazing enough that these guys can create such complex and spacey music, but to hear them keep it together so well in a live performance is mind-blowing. And to top it all off, Virgil even plays "Dog Boots" without so much as a hiccup during that three minutes of double strokes on the kick. If you liked their release, "Universe", you should like this live album, too. The only aspect keeping this from being a 5 star release is sound quality that isn't *quite* as nice as I'd like it to be - but still worth every cent.

3 stars UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!
No words can describe how amazing these players are. This is their best outing. Sherinian/Donati/MacAlpine (w/dave La Rue as guest bass) are tight. They make every odd time signature seem as easy as 4/4. Highlights: the whole CD. If you love progressive/fusion and precision this is it! Look no further.

5 stars Totally Amazing !!
Planet X is right. These guys are from another planet as far as musicianship goes.An awesome display of unbelievably good, technically frightening, live playing. At times you can only laugh in amazement at their incredible talent. Virgil Donati is simply stunning. NOT for the faint-hearted !
