Live At Home album
$9.79 As the title indicates, THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST is one of a handful of albums (also including Nas' ILLMATIC, Mobb Deep's INFAMOUS, and Black Moon's ENTA DA STAGE) that put the East Coast back on the hiphop map. West Coasters Dr. Dre and Snoop had stolen the spotlight with THE CHRONIC back in the summer of 1992. Jeru helped to usher in a renaissance of true-school rap.
SUN was entirely produced by hardcore composer DJ Premier, and the album represents his finest work. The beats themselves are nothing short of mindblowing. Shelly Manne's waterphones ("Come Clean") and the off-kilter piano loop on "D.Original" are worked into soundscapes worthy of Philip Glass or Steve Reich without any compromise of the music's ineluctable street appeal. In contrast to other Premier undertakings--where sterling production languishes beneath mediocre or inconsistent vocals--Jeru matches the producer ...
| | Pete Rock Soul Survivor II CD (2004) (Import)
Live At Home CD music
$10.85 SOUL SURVIVORS II continues Rock's streak of hip-hop mastery and features a host of respected rappers, who proceed to display their lyrical deftness over the best beats he has to offer. The RZA joins the GZA on the horn-laced "Head Rush," while lesser-known Krumbsnatcha states his case on the sinister "Beef," and the incomparable Pharoahe Monch contributes his rambling-yet-proficient rapping skills to the funky "Just Do It." The best moment, however, may be when Rock reunites with Smooth on the sly "It's a Love Thing." The result reaches the level of rap genius, and tops off a record that does not disappoint.
Pete Rock may be best known for his early-1990s work with C.L. Smooth and particularly for the duo's enduring hit "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)." However, given his collaborations with everyone from A Tribe Called Quest to Talib Kweli, the one-time DJ and his larger influence on hip-hop cannot be underestimated. Rock's beat-layering brilliance is most obvious ...
| | U.S. Music With Funkadelic CD (2009)
Live At Home music CDs
$10.75 This long-lost Funkadelic gem was recorded and mixed in 1972, but never released. By the early `70s, George Clinton and company were suffering from problems with personnel and labels, yet continued recording as a side-project called U.S. (standing for United Soul). The group included key members of Funkadelic, including Clinton and Bernie Worrell, and featured newly recruited singer, songwriter, and guitarist Gary Shider (who later became a permanent member of Parliament-Funkadelic).
The album departs from the dark, psychedelic meanderings of the band's first three albums and moves in a more song-oriented direction with an emphasis on rock guitar and grooves. Shider, in particular, shines on "Baby, I Owe You Something Good" and "Broken Heart," but the whole set serves to remind that Funkadelic were among the best (if underrated) bands ...

| | Allen Toussaint The Bright Mississippi CD (2009)
Live At Home album
$15.65 Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon all of Toussaint's myriad musical experiences, but often focuses on his incredibly soulful piano playing. Even when other instruments take the lead (the trumpet on "A Dear Old Southland," the clarinet on "Just ...
