| | Coleman Hawkins Timeless CD Coleman Hawkins Discography of CDs
One of seemingly dozens of reissues dating from Coleman Hawkins' glory days, 2002's TIMELESS collects recording sessions done with minor bands of the late '30s through the mid '40s, after Hawkins's half decade sojourn in Europe was cut short ... Full Descriptionby World War II. The lack of players equal to Hawkins' stature isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the functional but uninspired backing doesn't detract from Hawkins' truly remarkable solos. The set list is a mix of standards like "September Song," "You Can't Take That Away From Me," and "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face," mixed with other tunes credited to producers Ozzie Cadena and Billy Ver Planck. ("Credited to" is probably the correct term because these tunes, particularly Ver Planck's "Thanks for the Misery" sound like brief snatches of jam sessions caught on tape.) Sound quality is typically quite good, thanks to Rudy Van Gelder's excellent engineering. Overall, TIMELESS isn't necessarily outstanding, but Hawkins plays with his customary verve, and fans will not be disappointed.
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois and Hackensack, New Jersey in 1954 & 1958. Includes liner notes by Bill Milkowski.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Timeless album
$10.49 Those who've long ago written off Spyro Gyra as bland and/or commercial fluffy fusion will have to reassess their judgement after DOWN THE WIRE. While they haven't jettisoned their gregarious approach, the band concentrates here on capturing the spirit and energy of their live shows in the studio. Their tunefulness is intact, too. Spyro Gyra still combine rock, funk/R&B, and Latin styles with electric jazz, but their solos this time around pack a bit more punch.
Audio Remasterer: Martin Walters.
Spyro Gyra: Bonny B (vocals, drums, percussion); Julio Fernandez (guitar, guitars); Jay Beckinstein, Jay Beckenstein (saxophone); Tom Schuman (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Scott Ambush (bass guitar).

| | John Zorn Alhambra Love Songs CD (2009)
Timeless songs
$13.45 Proving that an avant-garde musician also possesses an affinity for the essentials of his or her craft, John Zorn steps back from Downtown weirdness for a gorgeously composed set of concise piano-based pieces that fall refreshingly outside both contemporary jazz's often forced eccentricity and its increasingly banal "smooth" alternative. Selections like "Moraga" and "Larkspur" have a little bit of playful, Peanuts-worthy charm, and there are some lightly-brushed ballads to break your heart ("Half Moon Bay," "Tamalpais"), but ALHAMBRA is primarily easy-going, mid-tempo stuff, anchored in the phenomenal and assured musicianship of Ron Burger, Greg Cohen, and Ben Perowsky.

| | Wayne Horvitz Forever CD (2000) (Import) Canada
Timeless music CDs
$15.95 Keyboardist/composer Wayne Horvitz has performed many different kinds of music in many different contexts. Rock 'n' roll-tinged avant-blowout with John Zorn's Naked City; neo-noir soundtracks for movies that haven't been made yet with his The President band; funky-groove jazz with his Zony Mash quartet; Americana-roots music with wife Robin Holcomb, and more. From the earthy to the cutting-edge, he's played it all.
On FOREVER, he gets back to his acoustic piano roots with a fairly straight-ahead jazz album, backed by guitar, bass and drums. The ambiance of Horvitz's moody tunes and production recalls the early ECM albums of Gary Burton and John Abercrombie. The ominously-titled but infectiously lyrical "Prepaid Funeral" channels the spirits of Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi with its genial, genteel swing. The sly, sultry Mediterranean-tinged "Capricious Midnight" recalls film composer Henry Mancini's music for the "Pink Panther" movies. Each track is rich with evocative melodies and supremely accomplished yet subdued playing--you never get the feeling anyone here is trying to "dazzle" the listener with "hot" soloing for its own sake.
FOREVER was previously issued as AMERICAN BANDSTAND.
Recorded at Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington on July 19 & 20, 1999. Includes liner notes by Wayne Horvitz.
Personnel: Wayne Horvitz (piano); Tim Young (acoustic & electric guitars); Keith Lowe (acoustic bass); Andy Roth (drums).
