This Savoy jazz compilation features previously issued tracks by saxophone great Coleman Hawkins. While this is a nice single-disc budget collection of Hawkins in the mid-'50s, it by no means represents the scope of his career. Collectors need not bother. ~ Matt Collar One of seemingly dozens of reissues dating from Coleman Hawkins' glory days, 2002's TIMELESS collects recording sessions done with minor bands of the late '30s through the mid '40s, after Hawkins's half decade sojourn in Europe was cut short by World War II. The lack of players equal to Hawkins' stature isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the functional but uninspired backing doesn't detract from Hawkins' truly remarkable solos. The set list is a mix of standards like "September Song," "You Can't Take That Away From Me," and "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face," mixed with other tunes credited to producers Ozzie Cadena and Billy Ver Planck. ("Credited to" is probably the correct term because these tunes, particularly Ver Planck's "Thanks for the Misery" sound like brief snatches of jam sessions caught on tape.) Sound quality is typically quite good, thanks to Rudy Van Gelder's excellent engineering. Overall, TIMELESS isn't necessarily outstanding, but Hawkins plays with his customary verve, and fans will not be disappointed.

Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (electric violin, violectra, bells, piano); Allan Zavod (piano, electric piano, clavinet, organ, synthesizer); Allan Holdsworth, Daryl Stuermer (electric guitar); Ralphe Armstrong (electric bass); Steve Smith (drums, percussion). Recorded in June and July, 1977. Consistently imaginative, Enigmatic Ocean is one of Jean-Luc Ponty's finest accomplishments. The French violinist recorded his share of fusion gems during the 1970s, and this album is at the top of the list. Often aggressive but sometimes reflective and moody, this CD is as unpredictable as it is adventurous. Ponty has plenty of room to stretch out, let loose, and blow, and electric guitarists Allan Holdsworth ...

Timeless
$14.95 FOREVER was previously issued as AMERICAN BANDSTAND. Personnel: Wayne Horvitz (piano); Tim Young (acoustic & electric guitars); Keith Lowe (acoustic bass); Andy Roth (drums). Recorded at Studio Litho, Seattle, Washington on July 19 & 20, 1999. Includes liner notes by Wayne Horvitz. Personnel: Wayne Horvitz (piano); Tim Young (guitar); Keith Lowe (bass instrument); Andy Roth (drums). Working with his band Zony Mash in an acoustic setting, Horvitz creates an album that is rich with flavor. From the introspective grace of "Ben's Music" to the sly tango of "In the Ballroom," the disc abounds with warmth and sensitivity. It's similar to the work of the Lounge Lizards in that it doesn't go by preconceptions of jazz, but uses the genre as a touchstone, venturing into everything from Eastern European motifs to surf guitar. A terrific album. [Forever is a straight re-issue of Horvitz's 2000 release American Bandstand. It seems Dick Clark objected to the title and forced a change]~ Tim Sheridan Keyboardist/composer Wayne Horvitz has performed many different kinds of music in many different contexts. Rock 'n' roll-tinged avant-blowout with John Zorn's Naked City; neo-noir soundtracks for movies that haven't been made yet with his The President band; funky-groove jazz with his Zony Mash quartet; Americana-roots music with wife Robin Holcomb, and more. From the earthy to the cutting-edge, he's played it all. On FOREVER, he gets back to his acoustic piano roots with a fairly straight-ahead jazz album, backed ...
