| | Esma Queen Of The Gypsies CD Esma Discography of CDs
The word "Gypsy" dates from when medieval Europeans erroneously concluded that these dark-skinned travelers were Egyptians. These days, following decades of antiracist consciousness-raising, Roma is the preferred term, as this is what they call themselves. Linguistic, cultural, and DNA evidence indicates that their endless migration probably began in northern India about a millennium ago. Although widely esteemed as musicians, they were mistreated just about anywhere they went. This probably explains the persistent hint of sadness that haunts even their most upbeat dance tunes. Esma Redzepova was born into an impoverished Jewish/Muslim Rom family in Skopje, Macedonia. A little girl with a huge voice, she was discovered at age 14 by bandleader Stevo Teodosievski, whom she later married. The couple toured incessantly, and since her husband's death, Esma has continued to front the ensemble he founded. Queen of the Gypsies contains two CDs, each containing a 12-track suite, one of Macadonian tunes and the other of Roma songs from other sources. Throughout, Esma's singing evinces extraordinary power, pride, and resolve. She has total command of her instrument, whether she is slicing notes like an onion, shooting the polyrhythmic rapids, purring like a lovesick girl, or erupting into ricocheting explosions of demi-quavers. The first play list begins with a poorly recorded but essential version of her late husband's most popular composition, "Zosto Si Me Majko Rodilo," a limpid ballad that allows the singer to preen and stretch. "Chaje Shukarije," number nine in the second grouping, is a much-covered tune about unrequited passion -- nobody has ever matched the stuttering, breathless urgency of Esma's interpretation. ~ Christina Roden
Includes liner notes by Esma Redzepova.

Queen Of The Gypsies album
$14.29 The word gypsy evolved when confused Europeans decided that these dark-skinned, much-misunderstood wanderers hailed from Egypt. These days, the preferred term is Roma (Rom is the singular and Romanes is the language the tribes use to communicate among themselves). Modern evidence indicates that their ancestors migrated out of Northern India about 1,000 years ago. Since then, they have been routinely celebrated as romantic traveling entertainers, but also persecuted as insular outsiders. Their music harbors poignant recollections of past tragedies, expressed via their own traditions and grafted onto those of various host cultures. Esma Redzepova's story is at once typical and extraordinary. She was born into a desperately poor Jewish/Muslim Rom family in Skopje, Macedonia. Her future husband, bandleader Stevo Teodosievski, discovered her when she was in her early teens and together they took the Balkans, and ...

| | Joao Gilberto Amoroso/Brasil CD (1993)
Queen Of The Gypsies music CDs
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards like "'S Wonderful" or "Besame Mucho" and Brazilian tunes like Jobim's "Wave" and the original "Triste," AMOROSO is a fine, romantic ...
| | Eros Ramazzotti Eros (Italian) CD (1997) Italian
Queen Of The Gypsies songs
$9.05 The Italian version of EROS contains 2 songs that do not appear on the Spanish version. It also contains 8 songs that are completely re-recorded.
At the height of his popularity, after establishing a fan base for himself across much of Western Europe as well as parts of the Spanish-language world, Italian singer/songwriter Eros Ramazzotti took some time off during the late '90s and released Eros, a greatest-hits compilation comprised primarily of newly recorded material. The 16-track compilation is comprised of five songs that appear in their original versions, nine that have been newly recorded specifically for this compilation, and two new ones. While the decision to re-record the majority of the inclusions is unusual for a greatest-hits album, Eros ends up being a much more interesting album than it would have been otherwise. The nine songs that are re-recorded are the early hits of Ramazzotti, namely "Terra Promesa" (originally released in 1984), "Una Storia Importante" (1985), ...

| | Deepak Chopra Gift Of Love: Deepak & Friends Present Music Inspired By The Love Poems Of Rumi CD (1998)
Queen Of The Gypsies CD music
$17.99 Adam Plack and Yaron Fuchs provide the Persian-flavored musical backdrop of A GIFT OF LOVE, but the real focus of this inspirational recording is the poetry of the 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi. Deepak Chopra is joined by a host of famous friends including Madonna, Martin Sheen, Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn, and others, reciting Rumi's poems about life, love, spiritual awareness, and worldly delights. The result is an album that will soothe both the ear and the soul.
Deepak Chopra's album features the voices of Madonna, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, and other stars, providing the project with instant allure, while bringing in a little street cred via civil rights activist Rosa Parks and Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman. Chopra would have been wise to hand over his own readings to the other performers, but overall, the album makes a good introduction to these timeless 13th century ...
