The word "Gypsy" dates from when medieval Europeans erroneously concluded that these dark-skinned travelers were Egyptians. These days, following decades of antiracist consciousness-raising, Roma is the preferred term, as this is what they call themselves. Linguistic, cultural, and DNA evidence indicates that their endless migration probably began in northern India about a millennium ago. Although widely esteemed as musicians, they were mistreated just about anywhere they went. This probably explains the persistent hint of sadness that haunts even their most upbeat dance tunes. Esma Redzepova was born into an impoverished Jewish/Muslim Rom family in Skopje, Macedonia. A little girl with a huge voice, she was discovered at age 14 by bandleader Stevo Teodosievski, whom she later married. The couple toured incessantly, and since her husband's death, Esma has continued to front the ensemble he founded. Queen of the Gypsies contains two CDs, each containing a 12-track suite, one of Macadonian tunes and the other of Roma songs from other sources. Throughout, Esma's singing evinces extraordinary power, pride, and resolve. She has total command of her instrument, whether she is slicing notes like an onion, shooting the polyrhythmic rapids, purring like a lovesick girl, or erupting into ricocheting explosions of demi-quavers. The first play list begins with a poorly recorded but essential version of her late husband's most popular composition, "Zosto Si Me Majko Rodilo," a limpid ballad that allows the singer to preen and stretch. "Chaje Shukarije," number nine in the second grouping, is a much-covered tune about unrequited passion -- nobody has ever matched the stuttering, breathless urgency of Esma's interpretation. ~ Christina Roden
Includes liner notes by Esma Redzepova.

Queen Of The Gypsies album
$14.29 The word gypsy evolved when confused Europeans decided that these dark-skinned, much-misunderstood wanderers hailed from Egypt. These days, the preferred term is Roma (Rom is the singular and Romanes is the language the tribes use to communicate among themselves). Modern evidence indicates that their ancestors migrated out of Northern India about 1,000 years ago. Since then, they have been routinely celebrated as romantic traveling entertainers, but also persecuted as insular outsiders. Their music harbors poignant recollections of past tragedies, expressed via their own traditions and grafted onto those of various host cultures. Esma Redzepova's story is at once typical and extraordinary. She was born into a desperately poor Jewish/Muslim Rom family in Skopje, Macedonia. Her future husband, bandleader Stevo Teodosievski, discovered her when she was in her early teens and together they took the Balkans, and later much of the world, by storm. When at home, the couple acted as surrogate parents to more than 50 musically talented orphans, ...

$9.59 The delirious "Intro" sets the stage for what's to come: murky synth washes are gently led into the sunshine by the sudden magisterial arrival of the flamenco guitar. Queen Of The Gypsies CD music
$14.89 The debut album by the High Kings was issued by the same folks who had a hand in Celtic Woman and Riverdance, and consists of easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music of appeal to an audience that is comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album made the lower levels of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The High Kings is glossy and polite -- targeted perhaps toward listeners who enjoyed the pennywhistle on Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" -- even on tunes that strive to be upbeat and frolicsome. ~ Stewart Mason
The debut album by the High Kings, brought to you by the same folks who had a hand in faux-Celtic abominations like Celtic Woman and Riverdance, brings up an important philosophical question: just exactly what is the demographic for this blend of middlebrow easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music? More to the point, what does that audience (which was comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album actually made the lower depths of the Billboard Top 200 album chart) get out of the antiseptic gloss of The High Kings that isn't available to them through the equally cleaned-up ...

$19.99 The Crustaceans take sweet pop hooks, driving rock energy, dabblings in country, and pure songwriting craft - and they throw it all together to make quirky but catchy songs that still sound great the third time around. The Sydney four-piece has been around for 4 years, gathering fans with their zany live shows, and also with their limited-release self-produced eps, which used to sell for 2 bucks a pop at their gigs. Maybe it was the price, maybe it was the songwriting genius on the discs, but those little eps achieved somewhat of a cult status around town, and led to airplay on radio FBI, 2SER ...
