Recorded between 1992 & 1995. Includes liner notes by Bill DeYoung.
This edition of Rhino's Essentials series does an effective job of chronicling the majority of hits by the modern country/Southern rock band Confederate Railroad from the early to mid-'90s. Among the original hit recordings are "Queen of Memphis," "She Took It Like a Man," "Jesus and Mama," and "Daddy Never Was the Cadillac Kind." For some reason the 1992 hit "She Never Cried" was excluded from this compilation. ~ Al Campbell
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| | Jerry Lee Lewis Mercury Smashes & Rockin' Sessions CDs (2000) (Import) Box Set; Germany
Essentials CD music
$257.05 MERCURY SMASHES & ROCKIN' SESSIONS includes complete albums released between 1970 and 1978 and previously unreleased material.
The third installment of Bear Family's exhaustive reissue of Jerry Lee Lewis' complete recordings, Mercury Smashes...and Rockin' Sessions, covers the era that many listeners, even some fans, dismiss -- his late-'60s and '70s recordings for Mercury. Conventional wisdom claims that the Killer was pretty much spent as a creative force during this time, since he had already made his near-triumphant comeback as a hard country singer on Mercury in the mid-'60s, and that he coasted on formula, except for the concentrated burst of the Roots album. Like most conventional wisdom, this one has a hint of truth, because his recordings did start to have a bit of ...

| | I'm A Man Of Constant Sorrow CD (2002)
Essentials songs
$14.29 Though it was obviously released simply to capitalize on the resurgence of interest in old-timey music occasioned by the success of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the 20-track collection I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow is an amazing, practically faultless compilation. Virtually every song here is a classic, whether for fans of old-timey, country, early blues, or gospel. Of the two tracks with the most interest for O Brother fans, only Harry McClintock's "Big Rock Candy Mountain" is the version heard in the movie, though the other -- the title track sung by the Stanley Brothers -- is the original on which the movie version was based (it betters the performance, if not the sound quality). Also of direct interest are "Keep on the Sunny Side" by the Carter Family, "In the Jailhouse Now" by Jimmie Rodgers, and "You Are My Sunshine" by Jimmie Davis (the last an early country star and later governor of Tennessee). Though few other inclusions have a connection to the movie, I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow succeeds on its mission of surrounding the events of the movie with a range of excellent roots music: hot fiddle music from Hoyt Ming & His Pep-Steppers, Bill Monroe, and Fiddlin' Sam Long, apocalyptic blues from ...
