The first disc of this 1998 reissue is the original album plus one bonus track; the second disc is a collection of 12 live and studio recordings originally intended to be released alongside disc 1.
Between 1990-1992, little was heard from one of the 1980s' most theatrical metal bands, W.A.S.P. Many assumed they'd broken up, especially when it became publicly known that the entire band had split from leader Blackie Lawless (the most surprising departure being longtime guitarist Chris Holmes). But the truth of the matter was that Lawless was hard at work the entire time, composing an epic concept album, 1993's The Crimson Idol, which told the tale of a tormented rock star, Jonathan. Lawless handled rhythm guitar, bass, vocal, and keyboard duties himself, and renowned studio musician Bob Kulick filled in Holmes' vacated position, while a pair of drummers were used (including the drummer on The Headless Children, Frankie Banali). The songs weren't a radical departure stylistically for W.A.S.P., and since no original members were left, The Crimson Idol is essentially a Blackie Lawless solo album. The over 74-minute album contained such hard-hitting highlights as "The Invisible Boy," "Chainsaw Charlie (Murders in the New Morgue)," and "I Am One." Unfortunately, The Crimson Idol sunk from sight upon release (keep in mind, this was the era of "grunge") but, interestingly, marked eventual Korn/Limp Bizkit producer Ross Robinson's first studio credit, as assistant engineer. [The 1998 CD reissue was expanded to a double-disc set, the second disc comprised of 12 b-sides (!). Included was a cover of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," the studio outtakes "Phantoms in the Mirror" and "The Eulogy," plus many acoustic renditions ("The Idol") and live tracks ("Chainsaw Charlie," "Wild Child," "The Real Me").] ~ Greg Prato

Crimson Idol album
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later ...

$6.49 After British maestro guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1974, he recruited Purple Records signees Elf as his backing band. And although Rainbow's 1975 debut was only a hint of future greatness, the album more than holds its own.
Elf was led by dramatic metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who seemed ...
| | Tesla Mechanical Resonance CD (1986)
Crimson Idol CD music
$7.65 Tesla was a bit of an anomaly on the '80s scene. While making concessions to the Sunset Strip mentality of the era (song titles littered with slang, tracks laced with thinly veiled euphemisms), the music itself holds a great deal more in common with rough-and-tumble hard rock than with watered-down glam. The record's greatest ...

In the 1990s, you'd have been hard-pressed to find a more forward-thinking zydeco outfit than Lil' Bryan and the Zydeco Travelers, and the Texans continue to take a lot of chances on 2000's Funky Nation. This is one zydeco band that isn't content to simply emulate Clifton Chenier; while Chenier is an influence, he's hardly the only one. Funky Nation gives the impression that lead singer/accordion player Bryan Terry, aka Lil' Bryan, and his colleagues ...

| | Phil Hammon Over My Head CD (2007)
Crimson Idol album
$11.39 Phil Hammon is a singer/songwriter exploring everyday life with a musical and humorous twist. With three CD's entitled "The Librarian's Nightmare", "Frankenstein Baby" and his BRAND NEW REALEASE 'Over My Head' it is apparent that Phil likes to have fun with his music. Whether dealing with issues of national concern, good/bad relationships or personal flaws, Phil always maintains a sense of humor. With a tendency to poke fun at his own life, directly, he tries to show people it is okay to laugh at one's self too. The goal is to lighten the load we all bear, emotionally and physically, through stress. Life is too short to be wound up like a spring and it is wonderful when people use music to help them unwind. However, don't be surprised if Weird Al is not what you get with Phil Hammon music. Actually, the music on his CDs has a mature Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock/Pop type of sound with a discerning edge. You might actually think of Phil's music as the double edge sword cutting into the soft underbelly of the soft pop genre. Always trying to find balance in life Phil also attempts to balance multiple genres into one pleasing format. Phil admits ...
