The French horn has never been one of jazz's more prominent wind instruments. If cornetist Buddy Bolden was playing what listeners now call jazz as early as 1895, the French horn had suffered at least 105 years of neglect as a jazz instrument when the 21st century arrived. That's regrettable, but it isn't necessarily bad news for French horn player Richard Todd -- the fact that jazz hasn't had nearly as many French horns players as saxophonists or trumpeters means that the instrument is still relatively fertile ground for him. Although Todd is quite capable of playing classical and pop, With a Twist is essentially an album of acoustic-oriented post-bop. This laid-back disc, which was recorded in 1999 and 2001, shows how expressive a soloist he can be. Todd's approach to the French horn is comparable to what Chet Baker did to the trumpet, Stan Getz did to the tenor sax, and Bill Watrous did to the trombone; in other words, he plays his horn in a very lyrical and caressing way. Todd's cool-toned lyricism is something to savor on original material as well as songs that range from "Days of Wine and Roses" to "Emily." Like so many acoustic jazz CDs, With a Twist has its share of standards that have been beaten to death -- "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" are among the songs that jazz fans have heard countless times. But because Todd is such an appealing soloist, one is inclined to be forgiving. And to his credit, he also unearths some material that hasn't been overdone. "Race," for example, isn't among Duke Ellington's better-known pieces. All things considered, With a Twist is an likable, if imperfect, CD that Todd can be proud of. ~ Alex Henderson

With A Twist album
$9.09 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home ...

$11.29 Released in celebration of Les Paul's 90th birthday, AMERICAN MADE WORLD PLAYED pays tribute to the master guitarist and inventor who changed the face of jazz, country, blues, and rock with his recording and guitar-design innovations. While the lineup here is stellar and includes vocalists Sting, Joss Stone, and Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), and guitarists Joe Perry (Aerosmith) and Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), among others, the album is at its best when it allows Paul to shine in an instrumental setting, as on the slinky ...

| | Ray Davies Kinks Choral Collection CD (2009)
With A Twist CD music
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral Collection isn't nearly as stuffy and middlebrow as so many of these orchestral rock albums; he manages to inject some semblance of rock & roll by pushing the songs forward with guitar, and letting the rhythms swing instead of plod. This looseness is the first big surprise of the album. The second is its unrepentant but quite possibly accidental silliness, how many of the major guitar riffs are transposed for choir, an audacious ...

With A Twist songs
$9.05 Madacy's Rock On 1987 is a 12-song collection of hits both big and small from 1987's pop charts. Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" is the largest hit here, but other dance-pop queens like Samantha Fox ("Touch Me"), Kim Wilde ("You Keep Me Hangin' On"), and Jody Watley ("Don't You Want Me") are represented. The rest of the disc includes some pop from Belinda Carlisle ("Heaven Is a Place on Earth"), modern R&B from Ready for the World ("Love You Down"), and Club Nouveau's pallid cover of Bill Withers' great "Lean On Me." The disc is far too brief to be anything but a random glimpse ...

| | Glenn Miller Time-1965/Great Songs Of The 60'S CD (2001)
With A Twist music CDs
$10.69 From four decades or more on, Glenn Miller Time 1965 may seem an unlikely recording project. The year 1965, after all, marked a continuation of the British Invasion in rock & roll music, with the volume and the attitude stepped up several notches amid the success of the Rolling Stones et al., and it was also the year of the folk-rock explosion and dozens of other pop culture phenomena that seem a long way from anything to do with Glenn Miller -- who had been gone just a couple of weeks past 20 years at the time of these recording sessions. But the mid-'60s also saw a less widely publicized but incontestable '40s nostalgia boom among audience members over 40 (remember how popular blockbuster war movies were then, not to mention World War II series such as Combat?). What's ...
