NEVERNEVERLAND is the debut of U.K. proto-punks the Pink Fairies.
Kicking off the most exhaustive exhumation yet of the Pink Fairies' early-'70s catalog, the remastered Neverneverland readily takes its place among the era's most crucial debuts, a hard-rocking, free-flowing, and, above all, anarchic monster that opens with the definitive statement of yippie intent, "Do It," and doesn't look back. Titled for radical Jerry Rubin's book of the same name, "Do It" remains a manifesto for the revolution that never quite got off the ground, a gutsy affirmation that the Pink Fairies were never to eclipse. Originally released as a January 1971 single, "Do It" also appears among the bonus tracks in its edited (three-minute) 45 rpm format, together with its turbulent B-side, the similarly barnstorming "The Snake." And it must be admitted that anybody entering the realm of the Pink Fairies from those points of view is in for at least a few surprises. While "Say You Love Me" and "Teenage Rebel" certainly adhere to the band's rockiest tendencies, the ballad "Heavenly Man" sounds like nothing so much as those other pink things, Pink Floyd circa Obscured by Clouds, while "War Girl" has a distinct American R&B tinge to it. Other moods float in and out of focus before Neverneverland returns to Free Festival central for the live crowd-pleaser "Uncle Harry's Last Freak-Out" -- present in both its 11-minute LP form and, among the bonus tracks, the 12-minute instrumental prototype that was one of the band's first studio attempts at the piece. Needless to say, both are as relentless as the title insists -- and as fiery as the Pink Fairies' own reputation demand they should be. ~ Dave Thompson

Neverneverland album
$8.95 The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is in fine voice on "After Forever" and "Lord of this World," while the more tranquil "Solitude" and the instrumental Iommi compositions "Embryo" and "Orchid" offer a bit of variety. Though not quite as influential as PARANOID, ...
| | Black Sabbath Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath CD (1973)
Neverneverland CD music
$8.65 While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic ...
| | Black Sabbath Technical Ecstasy CD (1976)
Neverneverland music CDs
$6.15 By the mid-'70s, a number of problems were threatening to break up the original line-up of Black Sabbath. The stress brought on by lengthy touring, drug use, and alcoholism had begun to dilute the band's original, influential heavy metal. Sabbath began to drift away from the straight-ahead power rock of such classic albums as PARANOID and SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, as evidenced by its final two albums to feature singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE. However, TECHNICAL ECSTASY does contain some intriguing, overlooked tracks.
The best known song of the bunch is the album-closing rocker "Dirty Women," which explores the topic of prostitution, and was later ...
| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CD (1971)
Neverneverland songs
$8.69 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).
The album's title is apt: PARANOID ...
| | Black Sabbath Never Say Die! CD (1978)
Neverneverland album
$6.09 By the end of the '70s, though Black Sabbath remained a top concert draw, its albums had become increasingly erratic and sub-par when compared to its earlier master works. Singer Ozzy Osbourne's growing disillusionment with the band had reached a boiling point, especially after it took so long to complete 1978's NEVER SAY DIE, the original line-up's final album. Though the album's title might suggest that the band had reconciled its differences (Osbourne had already left the band once previously, only to return shortly afterwards), the turmoil spilled over onto the recording.
The album-opening title track remains the record's ...
| | Holocaust Live (Hot Curry And Wine) CDs (1983)
Neverneverland CD music
$17.35 This reissue contains 2 bonus tracks from RAW, LOUD, LIVE EP.
Released at a time when the band was pretty much falling to pieces, Live (Hot Curry and Wine) combines tracks from Holocaust's influential debut, The Nightcomers, with a number of new songs and obscure tracks. Most crucially, this set contains possibly the only commercially available version of the band's classic "The Small Hours" (famously covered by Metallica -- and a corker it is too), along with some ...
| | Rockin' From Coast To Coast: Volume 2 CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Neverneverland music CDs
$16.99 Another volume of raw 1950s rock where obscurity fights it out with quality. The former trait getting the upper hand more often than not, although you might have heard a few of the names here, particularly Wanda Jackson and Ronnie Dee (aka Ronnie Dawson). Like the first volume, it's an OK sampler of the range of unbridled sounds recorded in the wake of the original rock & roll explosion, from both white and (less often) black artists. Joe Clay's "Duck Tail," Big T Tyler's "King Kong," and Tarheel Slim's "No. 9 Train" are big enough cult favorites that they -- along with the Jackson and Dawson cuts -- are on Rhino's Loud, Fast & Out of Control '50s rock box set. The remainder of the CD consists of about 20 other high-octane performances that are, more often than not, quite derivative of Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard, to name the most obvious targets. Sometimes the imitation is blatant enough to actually preclude ...
