As Meninas is Portuguese for "the girls." The name was adopted provisionally when vocalist Monica Vasconcelos and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock were auditioning for gigs in London. But the name stuck, even though two men have since joined: guitarist Ife Tolentino and drummer/percussionist Chris Wells. The four members hail from around the globe, but they live and work in London, where their elegant Brazilian stylings are particularly well received.
Much of the music on Bom Dia is strongly reminiscent of the jazz-influenced bossa nova style introduced by Stan Getz and Joao and Astrud Gilberto on the classic 1963 album Getz/Gilberto. But As Meninas puts its own stamp on the genre. Although they perform famous Jobim songs such as "Insensatez" and "Dindi," they also shed light on lesser-known figures such as Djavan, Jackson Do Pandeiro, and Dorival Caymmi. In addition to samba and bossa nova, they cook with the more exotic South American flavor of the baiao on "Tres Vendas" and the rump-shaking "Procurando Tu." While ballads like "Atrás Da Porta" come close to easy listening, the spare acoustic format of the group still casts a spell. It might seem like a stretch, but something about their female-fronted, rhythmically seductive sound brings to mind Pizzicato Five and Stereolab. ~ David R. Adler
This album could have been a greatest hits of Brazilian music, but the band have such a profound knowledge of the country's musical traditions that the obvious songs have been discarded in favour of overlooked gems!

| | Rodrigo Y Gabriela 11:11 CDs (2009) Digipak
Bom Dia CD music
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican guitar heritage. They've not simply melded the two, but have created an entirely different form of music for the acoustic guitar in the process. It's infectious and accessible, full of pathos, intensity, passion, and color.
Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson.
Arranger: Rodrigo y Gabriela.

| | Amalia Rodrigues CD (1997)
Bom Dia album
$10.19 Released by the DRG label in 1997, this compilation presents 20 tracks by the legendary Portuguese singer Amalia Rodrigues. The most revered artist in the melancholy fado style, Rodrigues became an international star in the 1950s and '60s, and that highly successful phase of her career is featured here. "Fado De Saudade" typifies her spare, lilting, and mournful aesthetic, with Rodrigues's voice sounding both powerfully assured and seemingly on the verge of tears at the same time. AMALIA RODRIGUES also includes "Coimbra," a classic Portuguese tune that became a staple in her repertoire, and "Fado Xuxu," which trades typically spare instrumentation for lush, orchestral backing. Like Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf, Rodrigues conveyed longing and sadness in a way that few singers are capable of, and this set admirably spotlights her considerable talent. Although THE ART OF AMALIA RODRIGUES is probably the best introduction to her music, this disc is another fine purchase for those building a Rodrigues album collection.
Recorded between 1953 and 1963.
Personnel: Amália Rodrigues (vocals); Jaime Santos, Santos Moreira (guitar).

| | Collectables Presents The History Of Rock Vol. 9. CD (1990) Remastered
Bom Dia songs
$10.19 Collectables' ten-volume History of Rock series doesn't have the decades-spanning scope that the title implies; instead, it pretty much stops at the mid-'60s and covers rock's early years, with a few inclusions from the latter half of the '60s. While each disc contains 14 songs that are smartly chosen, it's the type of series that only truly appeals to two kinds of people: those who are looking to own these songs on CD for the first time, and the unfamiliar who want a decent introduction to the era. Highlights on the ninth volume include the Newbeats' "Bread and Butter," Brenton Wood's "The Oogum Boogum Song," the Chiffons' "One Fine Day," Jerry Butler's "He Will Break Your Heart," and Cannibal & the Headhunters' "Land of 1000 Dances." ~ Andy Kellman

| | Sarah Palin Caribou Barbie CD (2009)
Bom Dia songs
$8.19 No it's not a Tina Fey comedy record but the actual words and voice of Sarah Palin, barnstorming the country as John McCain's vice-presidential running mate during the 2008 election campaign. Whatever else one may say about Ms. Palin, she definitely isn't dull, with her unorthodox syntax, instantly recognizable voice, and vivid presence. So this one-off compilation (let's hope it's the only one) is actually pretty entertaining and not only for Palin haters. It also makes for a fascinating document (or cautionary lesson) of modern political campaigns in general, as in the things some politicians will do and say on the trail. Not to be forgotten, Joe the Plumber is also acknowledged for his contribution to the political moment.
