This live recording of the Lord Karma Pakshi chant was made on December 28th, 2001 during the week-long Kamtsang Kagyu Sangha Monlam held in Bodhgaya, India. The Kamtsang Kagyu Sangha Monlam is an important and sacred annual event in Tibetan Buddhism, particularly so as His Holiness the 17th Karmapa was present at the ceremony this year. This week-long event consisted of meditation and prayers for world peace. The Karma Pakshi chant, or "sadhana" as it is also called, is a Karma Kagyu Buddhist meditation practice invoking the power and blessing of the second incarnation of the Karmapa.The second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi, was born in 1203. He was the reincarnation of the first Karmapa. This was the first time a Tibetan Lama or teacher had been recognized as a previous incarnation. Teachers who are recognized from previous lives are called "tulkus," and thus Karma Pakshi was the first "tulku" in Tibet.Bodhgaya is a place of great religious and historic significance in India. A giant, famous bodhi tree marks the exact location where the Buddha attained enlightenment 2500 years ago. It was in this sacred setting that His Holiness the Seventeenth Karmapa, accompanied by His Eminence Gyaltsap Rinpoche, His Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Mingyur Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche, Bokar Rinpoche, Bardor Tulku Rinpoche, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche and 3500 monks, nuns and dharma students from around the world performed this Karma Pakshi practice.
