Initial pressings of THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION included a limited edition bonus disc featuring four previously unreleased tracks.
Recorded between November 1964 and June 1982. Includes liner notes by Matt Kent and Andy Neill.
When it comes to a ground-breaking, iconic band like the Who, dubbing an anthology THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is no small claim. The kicker here is that it happens to be the truth. Without venturing into the realm of the box set, there's never been such a definitive batch of Who tunes all under one roof before. Virtually all the bases are covered here, from such attitude-laden mid-'60s mod anthems as "My Generation" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" to the conceptual expansiveness of TOMMY-era tunes ("I'm Free," "See Me Feel Me"). We get the full-on long-haired, bare-chested glory of the early '70s ("Won't Get Fooled Again") as well as the tapered, synth-flecked smartness of the early '80s ("Eminence Front," "You Better You Bet." For someone looking for an entry point into the work of this larger-than-life group, or just somebody who wants a great all-purpose who disc, THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is truly a case of truth in advertising. Get one.
Keith Moon, Kenney Jones (drums).

THE WHO NEED I SAY MORE IF YOU LIKE THE WHO THIS IS THE CD FOR YOU COVERS ALOT OF GROUND WITH ONLY A LITTLE BIT OF "TOMMY" MISSING Submitted by a reviewer ("BERGEN, NY USA") Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 4 found this helpful.
Well, it's About Time....! Okay,so the rule of thumb with "Greatest Hits" packages is that about half of it is really great stuff and the other half makes you wonder what the record company guys were on when they assembled it. And then you have to wonder what happened to all the other great stuff they left off. Well, it did NOT happen this time. Every song on this TRUE "ultimate Collection" is a winner. Die-hard fans may find one or two vital songs missing ("The Relay", "We're Not Gonna Take it"), but hey, it's not a perfect world. Just look at all the gems that are included here! Think of it as the poor man's boxed set. Submitted by a reviewer (Eugene, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 4 found this helpful.
buy it A FRIEND ASKED THE FOLLOWING - IT SAYS IT ALL I THINK . . .
"What do you think of the new Who collection? A fairly impeccable
selection of songs, but something you or I could have done in our sleep, right? "Call Me Lightning" is perhaps the only surprise. I always liked that song -- it wasn't released here but I had the British Direct
Hits. How about the sound? I'm only about half way thru disc 1. No revelations yet -- looks like that will have to wait for the stereo Shel Talmy CD. Have you A-B'd any of the early things? I may try to do that
tonight. I assume the mastering is similar to the box set. See for Miles is the stereo mix -- too bad, they coulda put the mono on the bonus disc. Too bad that Relay was left off -- would have been a good opportunity to put those four post Who's Next singles together. Disc 1 is only 67 minutes!"
AGREED 100% - BUT STILL WORTH HAVING . . . JUST WISH THEY'D GIVEN IT A BIT MORE THOUGHT AND CARE
