| | Don Ellis At Fillmore CDs (1970)
21 In The Moment CD music
$16.39 This is a crazy and consistently riotous two-disc set that features the Don Ellis Orchestra at its height. The 20-piece orchestra (with trumpeter Ellis doubling on drums along with a regular drummer and two percussionists) often used electronic devices (such as ring modulators) at the time to really distort its sound. When coupled with odd time signatures and such exuberant soloists as Ellis, trombonist Glenn Ferris, tenor saxophonist John Klemmer (showcased on the remarkable "Excursion II"), guitarist Jay Graydon, altoists Fred Selden and Lonnie Shetter, ...

| | Jack Jones Greatest Hits CD (1995)
21 In The Moment CD music
$6.49 The early sound of Jack Jones is a mix of Mel Torme's velvet jazz and the mainstream romance of Tony Martin. These 18 hits of his are pretty much straight forward pop ballads, but Jones possesses a rare voice that takes orders directly from the heart, hence the renditions are models ...
| | Bunk Johnson 1944 CD (1991)
21 In The Moment music CDs
$11.79 Trumpeter Bunk Johnson recorded extensively with his band of New Orleanians during 1944-45, including multiple performances of some of their selections. The American Music label, in their series of Bunk CDs, have straightened out the music to an extent, although some alternate takes have still only come out on sets by Japanese companies and the performances have not been reissued in strict chronological order. This ...
| | Stan Kenton Sketches On Standards CD (1956) Remastered
21 In The Moment songs
$10.09 This LP contains six Bill Russo arrangements, five from Stan Kenton, and one by Lennie Niehaus. The repertoire features many songs not associated with Kenton (such as "Sophisticated Lady," "Pennies from Heaven," and "Over the Rainbow"), but the inventive yet melodic treatments certainly sound like the Kenton band. The main soloists are altoist Lee Konitz, guitarist Sal Salvador, trumpeter Conte Canoli, and trombonist Frank Rosolino and, although these concise interpretations (none of the dozen performances is much over three minutes) are not essential, the music is quite pleasing. This collection is a change of pace for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. ~ Scott Yanow
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Recorded at Capitol Studios & Goldwyn Studios, Los Angeles, California between 1953 & 1956. Originally released on Capitol 10" LP (426). Includes liner notes by Michael Sparke.

| | Abbey Lincoln It's Me CD (2003)
21 In The Moment album
$15.59 In a return to the orchestrated settings that she had explored nearly a decade earlier on A Turtle's Dream, Lincoln performs a set rich in variety, with plenty of original tunes that more than hold their own amidst a scattering of classic standards. Whether working with or without strings, she maintains a sophisticated and intimate tunefulness; her adherence to melody, and to subtle phrasing as an alternative to showy improvisation, has always earned comparisons to the work of Billie Holiday, though in this case Lincoln more than matches and arguably surpasses much of the legendary singer's work. Her husky timbre, extraordinary sense of swing at any tempo, and sometimes surprising range make each of these tracks a masterwork of interpretation. ...

| | Cyndi Lauper Merry Christmas...Have A Nice Life! CD (1998)
21 In The Moment music CDs
$6.39 Cyndi Lauper closed out her Epic Records contract with this holiday album, which consists mostly of original compositions. Lauper seeks the Christmas spirit in some snowless locales, giving a Cajun sound to "Early Christmas Morning" and an appropriately tropical feel to "Christmas Conga." She favors folkie arrangements and is heard playing dulcimer, recorder, and ukulele, among other instruments, which lend a homemade feel to the tracks. Merry Christmas...Have a Nice Life! is an unusual but ultimately winning collection, rendered with Lauper' s typical cockeyed conviction. ~ William Ruhlmann

21 In The Moment album
$13.25 "Whales Sing," the opening track on the Shaky Hands' debut album, features an extended organ and percussion instrumental groove that balances right on the edge of being a complete rip-off of Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" as played by a bunch of indie-kid record store clerks. After that promising opening, the Portland, OR band quickly devolve into yet another post-Elephant 6 band of shambling, amiable dudes who ...
