Building on the return of gifted guitarist John Frusciante on 1999's CALIFORNICATION, BY THE WAY finds the Red Hot Chili Peppers crafting an intricately crafted follow-up light years beyond the band's simple punk-funk origins. Re-teaming with longtime producer Rick Rubin, the Chili Peppers deftly add varied stylistic ingredients to a musical stew of unexpected nuance. Frusciante deals out brisk, flamenco-flavored acoustic rhythm guitar to the breezy Latin outing "Cabron," choppy chords on the ska-like "On Mercury," and double-tracked strands of guitar on "Dosed," a heartfelt ode to love.
Amid this orgy of creative rediscovery, funk still remains an important component of the band's sound as evidenced by the infectious rhythms of Flea's bass playing and Frusciante's trademark chicken-scratch fretwork found on the tasty "Can't Stop" and the space-age tribal stomp of "Throw Away Your Television". Other high points find these Cali crazies stringing a distinct Motown beat and Beatles-flavored harmonies throughout the irresistible "Universally Speaking" and adding strings to the ruminative "Midnight," with its gradually escalating monster groove. Despite the daunting, 70-minute length of BY THE WAY, the mature execution and musical change-ups make this a major milestone in the Red Hot Chili Peppers canon.

Canada's Fear Factory is part of the '90s industrial metal scene that, unlike its Luddite '70s/'80s forebears, has no qualms about embracing technology (in this case, synths, programming and even a DJ) in the service of their dark, almost gothic vision. On OBSOLETE, the band owes much of its sound to thrash metal, with churning, gut-punching guitar riffs, sore-throat-from-hell vocals and an unrelentingly ominous mood. Like the legendary Spinal Tap's inability to hold onto a drummer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have grappled with a revolving guitarist problem since the 1988 death of Hillel Slovak. Former Jane's Addiction axe-man Dave Navarro climbs aboard the Chili Pepper Express for ONE HOT MINUTE, which also marks the return of Rick Rubin to the production helm.
Navarro's arrival coincides with a more experimental approach by the group.
The transformations don't so much alter the funk-based sound of the band as they strain it through an ethereal colander of radical time changes. "Warped," the first single and leadoff cut, demonstrates this with a balls-to-the-wall adrenaline rush that abruptly concludes with a gentle outro. Other variations on the trademark punk-funk sound include a children's chorus on "Aeroplane," a talk box coupled with some mantra-like chanting on "Falling Into Grace," and the Beatlesque marriage of sitar and other strings on "Tearjerker."
