(3 Customer Reviews)
A country influence (via pedal steel) creeps into the arrangements on Old Dan's Records. Also included full time is a drummer making this a much more contemporary sounding album, as Gordon Lightfoot began to move away from his folk influences and into the pop/rock field. Sure, there still is the folk songs, such as "The Same Old Obsession," but this album was the seed planted which would flower in upcoming releases. A pivotal point in Lightfoot's career. ~ James Chrispell

Old Dan's Records album
$9.54 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas ...

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD (2009)
Old Dan's Records music CDs
$8.79 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming ...

$9.69 Win Lose or Both, true to its name, is split between four brand new studio recordings and nine live versions of Fastbacks favorites. The studio tracks are a treat, particularly the opening "No Music Played," which alternates a spare vocals-and-guitar verse with choruses that make use of that '70s art rock staple the E-bow ...
| | Madonna Like A Virgin CD (1984)
Old Dan's Records songs
$10.29 Includes rare 12" dance remixes previously unavailable on CD.
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Madonna had already made serious waves with her 1983 self-titled debut, springing her irresistibly exuberant, sexy dance-pop onto an unsuspecting public. But it was 1984's LIKE A VIRGIN that exhibited the calculated pop mastery that would define the singer's career. Everything from the cover art (which features Madonna splayed out provocatively in a wedding dress) to the sleek production from Chic's Nile Rogers announced Madonna's arrival as the queen of pop.
If only for the album's two gargantuan smash singles, the bouncy, coy, gold-digging ode "Material Girl" and the racy title cut, LIKE A VIRGIN would go down in pop history. The dominating force of both songs, their videos, and their subject matter helped make Madonna a household name. The rest of the album delivers too. The energetic shimmy of "Dress You Up" and "Angel" are infectious dance floor workouts, and her cover of Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is sharp and compelling. LIKE A VIRGIN still shines as an indispensable `80s dance-pop classic.
