Platinum Collection is a triple-disc set that contains one disc of Enigma's greatest hits, one disc of remixes, and one disc of "The Lost Ones," brief instrumental snippets that were used as source material and ideas for full-length tracks. Naturally, this last disc is what's interesting for the hardcore; unlike the rest of the set, this disc consists of unreleased material, but even the hardcore may find this slightly ephemeral; after all, these were designed as something like work tapes, not for release. The rest of the set is a good overview of basics, but it's still unclear exactly who this is for, as this recycles too much for the hardcore, and it's too lengthy for the casual fan. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Hilliard Ensemble, known for its serious yet musical approach to plainchant, organum, early polyphony and even contemporary music, breaks new ground here. Added to the normal four male voices is soprano saxophonist Jan Garbarek. What could a saxophonist possibly have to do with vocal music composed before 1650? Not much perhaps, but this combination creates some wonderful and rare colors. Inside the monastery of St. Gerold, these five musicians were not too concerned about the "type" of music they were making; instead they just made music.
Jan Garbarek's sax improvisations arch over the vocal foundation, and the monastery itself is the sixth musician. The natural echoes and fades create seamlessness and add a layer of religious mist to this already spiritual music.
A 20th century instrument, four voices and music composed almost 500 years before their births conjoin to create a timeless sound. If ever there were spacious music, this is it. Garbarek sometimes spins a Kenny G-like melody way above the singers and other times blends almost imperceptibly. Perhaps the music is at its best during the latter case, but throughout this disc, the musicians are fully committed to their craft.

On Daniel Yost's debut album he proves himself to be quite adept at his instrument, experimenting with unorthodox sounds, rhythms, and techniques. The songs themselves range from the light, expressive "Sonatina for a Nihilist" and "The Passion of an Unknown Saint" to the frenetically percussive "Proteus (The Shape-Shifter)" and "The Glass Factory", a minimalist work for 8 guitars. The "Three Vaguely Spanish Bagatelles" give evidence to a flamenco influence and the opening track "Slavic Dance" brings to mind folk music styles of Eastern Europe.
