Live Album music CDs Product Description

Though their reputation hasn't survived as well as some of their contemporaries, Grand Funk Railroad were one of the biggest American bands of the early 1970s. Live Album album Caught in full flight on this live album, the band that brought Cream's power-trio concept to the U. S. stadium circuit can be easily identified as the link between Woodstock-era blues-rockers like Ten Years After and the heavier rock bands of the '70s. Singer/guitarist Mark Farner is the focal point, as his wailing vocals and fret-burning guitar licks take center stage throughout. Bassist Mel Schacher and drummer Don Brewer provide muscular support without venturing into showoff territory.

At this point, the band's songwriting acumen was still in a developmental stage (it would come to full fruition within the next couple of years), so many of the songs feature extended jams built around simple-but-effective blues-based riffs, but Grand Funk's bag of tricks wasn't entirely devoid of catchy choruses (the soulful "Heartbreaker") or smart cover tunes (the Animals' "Inside Looking Out"). The band's LIVE ALBUM is a definitive statement not only of what they were about, but of the early-'70s mainstream rock scene as a whole.

Recorded live at Jacksonville Coliseum, Jacksonsville and W. Palm Beach Civic Auditorium, Palm Beach, Florida on June 23-24 1970. Originally released on Capitol (633). Includes liner notes by Steve Roeser.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Grand Funk Railroad: Mark Farner (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Don Bewer (vocals, drums); Mel Schacher (bass).

Terrible... Sounds like a bootleg copy.
I just purchased this cd from this web site. I didn't know GFR had another live album, other than Caught in the Act. Read the reviews, thought I'd give it a try. Terrible sound, worst live album I own. The music would be great if there was better quality. I'm no expert, but couldn't you improve on the sound without taking aware the authenticity?

'70's stoner rock that is ssoooo now
On of the best Live rock albums of all time. 'Into the Sun' would have to be one of the hardest blowing songs ever done [live]. If you want to listen to where alternative found its feedback and distortion [intentional] then listen to this. The volume and power of King Crimsons 'Earth bound' with the energy and commitment of the John Butler Trio's 'Living'. Love the album. Only critism, a bit more stereo separation would have been nice, still it is live and raw, with real power. Its a pity the group never matched this uncommercial album with anything the same again, I'd own a truckload of GFR if they ever did.

An album from the era when bands really played live.
It took another 20 years after the release of this record for the hip music press to understand what a garage band was supposed to sound like. The critics will tell you that sound came from Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but those of us old enough to remember know that it really came from the first couple of Grand Funk Railroad albums. Nirvana is just early Grand Funk played in a minor key. This live collection is without question one of the best live albums ever made. A powerful show, a very "live sounding recording," a feel which catches the spirit of the era, and a beautifully paced performance which shows just how effective live music can be when it is played with conviction, even if the players are not technical wizards. And, frankly, Mark, Don and Mel were no slouches on their respecitve instruments. This album gets my vote for the one of the most underrated records of all time. Anyone who likes their rock straight, hard and powerful will love this album.

THE ULTIMATE LIVE ALBUM
Grand Funk Live is the best and the dirtiest live album to ever grace my music machines. You have to hear this one to see what a real Grand Funk concert sounds like. Grand Funk is The American Band. #1 on the album is In Need. From the magnificently distorted and furious guitar to the furious drumming to the fantastic singing to the Thunderous buffalo fart bass. This album is pure excitement and energy.

Grand Funk Live gets better and better
I think this is the 3rd version of this album I've owned on CD and by far the best. As much as I hate buying the same album again, I was not happy with the previous versions. I feel it has been cleaned up nicely and rivals the sound quality of the original vinyl.
