Deconstruction Ahead
$13.00 Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out. With HISTORICTY, he touches on many different levels of acumen, influenced by contemporary alternative rock, Motown, show tunes, pop fusion, the early creative music of the '70s, and ethnic strains. Iyer also revisits two of his older compositions, with the majority of this progressive jazz -- whether "covers" or originals -- done completely ...

Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience of forward-looking jazz devotees and progressive rock fans.
The music on THE INNER MOUNTING FLAME is incendiary and highly improvisational. Well-conceived unison melodic passages structure each tune, and McLaughlin and company play like the virtuosos they are throughout. "The Noonward Race" features a bluesy, yet harmonically dissonant solo from McLaughlin, and the frenetic drumming of Billy Cobham. In contrast, in "A Lotus on Irish Streams," McLaughlin soars passionately on an acoustic guitar, while violinist Jerry Goodman adds a simple, folky melody.

| | John Coltrane Fearless Leader CDs (2006) Remastered; Box Set
Deconstruction Ahead
$42.85 This six-disc set collects just some of the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane's prodigious recorded output for the Prestige jazz label during the mid-1950s, assembled in chronological order. More conventional than his later 1960s work, these tracks nevertheless convey some idea of his fiery individualism, with highlights including a bop version of "Soft Lights and Sweet Music," as well as lyrical readings of Billy Strayhorn's world-weary "Lush Life" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust."

| | Kora CD (2008) (Import) Import
Deconstruction Ahead
$19.69 After the success of their self-released EP, this debut has been eagerly anticipated. A thoroughly family affair; Brad, Laughton, Francis and Stuart Kora along with Dan McGruer mixing Roots-reggae, Funk and House with Hard rock elements and have taken the band from Whakatane to one of this countries most respected and thrilling live bands. The band first came to public attention with the tracks 'Politician' and 'Burning' and after featuring on numerous prominent Roots-based releases (Conscious Roots and several Loop and Dub Conspiracy comps) they released 'EP Volume' themselves, eventually gaining gold-status in sales. This album has been a long-time coming but it's been well worth the wait. Strong, soulful vocals with that unique brotherly harmony blend couple as well as tight ...
