Deconstruction Ahead album
$12.80 Recorded live at Lincoln Center's American Songbook Series, New York, New York.
Perhaps taking a page from Karrin Allyson's note-perfect tribute to John Coltrane's BALLADS, the contemporary jazz singer Kurt Elling offers his own live tribute to the classic Impulse LP JOHN COLTRANE & JOHNNY HARTMAN, the tenor icon's 1963 collaboration with the perennially underrated Hartman, an exquisitely mannered singer who brought out the romantic best in both Coltrane and his listeners alike. The burnished-voiced Elling brings his own considerable romantic best to this 2008 Lincoln Center concert (part of the "American Songbook" Series) with fulsome support from pianist Laurence Hobgood, who also did the skillful string quartet arrangements (played by ETHEL), and saxophonist Ernie Watts. Elling in no way channels Hartman; he retains his own contemporary style as he delves into key selections from COLTRANE & HARTMAN like "Lush Life," "They Say It's Wonderful," and, of course, "Dedicated To You," itself a nod to the swooning '40s duet by Coltrane favorite Billy Eckstine and Sarah Vaughan. ...
| | Allen Toussaint The Bright Mississippi CD (2009)
Deconstruction Ahead CD music
$15.65 Fans of legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint may at first be surprised that, for his first album in over a decade, the producer, songwriter, and pianist would choose to forgo recording his own stellar material in favor of a collection of cover tunes. The songs here aren't just any songs, however, but a rich selection of Big Easy standards, as interpreted by one of the city's most gifted musical sons. The resulting Joe Henry-produced gumbo draws upon all of Toussaint's myriad musical experiences, but often focuses on his incredibly soulful piano playing. Even when other instruments take ...

| | Fatboy Slim Palookaville CD (2004) With Aske Sampler; Limited Edition
Deconstruction Ahead CD music
$16.29 Heavy-hitting DJ Norman Cook (AKA Fatboy Slim) brings the Big Beat back on 2004's PALOOKAVILLE, a record that rivals Cook's previous efforts for imagination, groove, and fun. Cook's particular skill lies in creating a collage of genres from his seemingly never-ending vault of vinyl, bringing them all under one happy, party-time umbrella. The lead-off track, "Don't Let the Man Get You Down," for example, blends gospel vocals, Latin-tinged polyrhythms, and a snippet from Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs," with flashes of robotic IDM sounds, for good measure.
PALOOKAVILLE is a bit more textured and chilled-out than Cook's earlier albums. The acoustic-guitar-based "Put It Back Together," for instance, sounds like the clubby equivalent of a campfire sing-along. "North West Three" is based around the refrain of John Martyn's folky "Primrose Hill," and is true to the feel of the source, despite Cook's additional edits and beats. On the disc's most notable track, "The Joker," Cook re-imagines Steve Miller's hit as a piano-laden funk tune with the one-and-only Bootsy Collins on vocals. This is not to say the record doesn't feature Slim's infectious techno beats, however. The nervous, skittering ...

Deconstruction Ahead album
$38.09 This six-disc set collects just some of the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane's prodigious recorded output for the Prestige jazz label during the mid-1950s, assembled in chronological order. More conventional than his later 1960s work, these tracks nevertheless convey some idea of his fiery individualism, with highlights including a bop version of "Soft Lights and Sweet ...
