Debut from The Used who have performed on the Warped and Ozzfest Tours. Special Enhanced CD featuring a video of 'A Box Full Of Sharp Objects' plus 12 tracks. Features the single 'The Taste Of Ink'. 2002.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Used: Quinn Allman (vocals, guitar); Jeph Howard (vocals, bass); Branden Steineckert (vocals, drums); Bert McCracken (vocals). Additional personnel: Carmen Daye (background vocals). Recorded at Foxy Studios, Marina Del Rey, California and Olympic Studios, London, England. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Utah's the Used sound like a lot of different bands on their self-titled debut album. The sequencing of the disc seems intended to give the early impression that they are a metal band, but as the album goes on the music softens to hard rock and even ballads backed by strings. Similarly, lead singer Bert McCracken starts out howling, but by the third track, "Bulimic," he is affecting a Perry Farrell-like hoarse delivery, and later on he even sings in a nearly normal voice. (Sometimes, as in the seventh track, "A Box Full of Sharp Objects," he alternates approaches between verses and chorus.) The musical development mirrors the lyrics, in which McCracken begins with typical expressions of youthful frustration, culminating in the fifth track, "Poetic Tragedy," written in the third person, which depicts a suicide, but then begins to find satisfaction in romantic attachment to the point on the album's final credited track, "Pieces Mended" (there is also a hidden track long after the end), that he is proposing marriage. (Along the way, he drops the "F" word casually numerous times, but the album does not contain a parental advisory sticker.) So, The Used has a definite progression, musically and lyrically. But it is also all over the map in terms of musical approach. Some of it could be played on MTV beside Creed and Vertical Horizon, some of it recalls the rage of Fuel, and some goes even further into forbidding metal. That range should give Reprise Records, the band's label, plenty to work with, but it may confuse potential fans. ~ William Ruhlmann Although much is made of this Utah foursome's rebellious background (singer Bert McCracken's former drug addiction and the band's pre-record deal pan-handling street-kid lifestyle), all that's really required to ascertain the level of the band's commitment is a close listen to their self-titled debut release. They leap into each song as though their lives depended upon it (maybe they're not so anxious to go back to spare-changing). While they are initially presented as another entrant in the aggro-rock sweepstakes, there's a bit more than that to the Used. Sure, McCracken can let out blood-curdling screams of angst with the best of them, and there's no shortage of blazing guitars and pounding drums, but the Used seem to have spent at least as much time listening to Jane's Addiction as they have to the Deftones. The band's range is made most clear by the acoustic-guitar-and-strings ballad "On My Own" and the melodic piano motif at the end of the closing song "Pieces Mended."Q (1/03, p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...McCracken's strangulated wail kicks off a series of surprisingly subtle songs that come charging in like screaming thrash metal....A crafted, full-throttle debut..." CMJ (7/15/02, p.16) - "...This band's passionate performances will likely be too alluring for even the most stringent metal and hardcore fans to ignore....McCracken seesaws between throat-searing shrieks and high notes that are as smooth as a baby's fat chushy ass..." Used Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews punk con mucho poder puta man este disco es impresionante conbina el hardcore punk y mucha melodia en la voces de este tipo que tiene una voz suave y tierna pero con un poder de grito muy bueno como Glassjaw tipo de esas bandas solo que mas comercial. Used
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product ...

| | Box Car Racer CD (2002)
Used
$12.15 Thomas Delonge & Travis Barker From Blink-182
Box Carr Racer: Thomas DeLonge (vocals, guitar); Dave Kennedy (guitar); Anthony Celestino (bass); Travis Barker (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar, bass). Box Car Racer: Thomas DeLonge (vocals, guitar, bass); Dave Kennedy (guitar); Roger Joseph Manning (keyboards); Travis Barker (drums). Additional personnel: Mark Hoppus, Tim Armstrong (vocals). Recorded at Signature Sound, San Diego, California; Larabee, West Hollywood, California; O'Henry Studios, Burbank, California. If anyone ever got the feeling that, in spite of its success, blink-182 has strayed much farther from its roots than the band ever expected possible (and possibly ever wanted), one listen to the eponymous disc from the side project of members Travis Barker and Thomas DeLonge would provide even more evidence. Boxcar Racer removes the tongue-in-butt-cheek juvenility of the multi-platinum pop stars, and what remains could fit in perfectly alongside any of the emo output on indie labels such as Jade Tree. While blink-182 is known for providing poppy punk, this is as different as Bad Religion is to the band, just in the opposite direction, but the main divergence is lyrics that are retrospective and thoughtful -- witness "Watch the World," which could fit on a Dashboard Confessional record, with a libretto that boarders on poetry. This is a far cry from the party-boy ethos DeLonge is best known for, and he wears the emotional depth well, with songs that are just as hooky as from his bread-winning main squeeze. ~ Brian O'Neill Strictly a Blink-182 side project (featuring that band's guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker), Box Car Racer doesn't stray too far from addressing the needs and concerns of the "other" band's core teen fanbase. Choosing to leave behind the toilet humor and skate-punk swagger normally associated with Blink, this outing instead goes down the road of vulnerability and insecurity that makes up the dark side of adolescence. Not surprisingly, Box Car Racer's stylistic hard-wiring features plenty of harmonies, prickly riffs, and pounding rhythms that come to the fore on the funky "And I," the hard-charging time changes of the opening "I Feel So," and the raging hardcore of "My First Punk Song." Balancing out all this aggression are numbers where DeLonge swaps his electric guitar for an acoustic; heartfelt proclamations of love ("There Is") and the realization of life's fragility ("Letters To God"). Rounding out this self-titled debut are guest spots by Rancid's ...
