What Gives? music CDs. On GREATEST HITS, we hear why Brown and Checker became enamored of this former Ford assembly line worker's style. There's a hard gospel edge and intense, passionate singing on all 12 tracks, and 1953's "Get It," replete with the little "ouwww's" that are now associated most often with James Brown, is a prime example of Ballard's bluesy, Southern-fried attitude. Other titles of note include Ballard's series of "Annie" songs: "Work with Me Annie," "Annie Had a Baby" and "Annie's Aunt Fannie". This collection of ballads and blues shuffles is a window into the true history of R&B.
This rock & roll Hall Of Famer had a tremendous impact on the R&B trends of the '50s and '60s, and consequently on rock & roll, Motown, and even newer, funkier styles of jazz. The composer of "The Twist" and many other now-classic hits, Hank Ballard had a career often overshadowed by those whom he had influenced; both James Brown and Chubby Checker notably borrowed from Ballard's innovations.
Personnel: Hank Ballard (vocals).
