This series of sometimes stunningly beautiful, occasionally revelatory improvisations finds the avant-garde reedsman Elton Dean and the guitarist Mark Hewins in perfect sync, as Dean solos lyrically over the musical foundation of Hewins's atmospheric synthesized guitar. Recorded in the early 1990s, the duo spans electronic, jazz and ambient genres, in a free-form yet never formless set.
This CD presents an improvised duo setting with guitarist Mark Hewins, a longtime partner with a remarkable talent for atmospheric accompaniment. The music on this release focus-es on the most lyrical' dimension of Dean's saxophone playing, with melodic

The Wire (2/02, p.51) - "...Hewin's synth guitar creates an environment laden with artifice, but the gamble paid off. Dean pursues his lyrical inclinations to the verge of contemplative blowing....lovely moments occur regularly throughout the 3 pieces..." JazzTimes (4/2002, p.84) - "...Hewins crafts continually morphing soundscapres, drones and largely static harmonic patterns....pacific and new agey enough to double as mediation music..." | | Henry Threadgill This Brings Us To, Vol. 1 CD (2009) Digipak
Bar Torque music CDs
$13.09 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to confound even those most oriented to his quirky pieces. Where the quintet Zooid lands in this quirky quandary of pegging a signature sound is subject to guesswork, but it definitely has its own brand of concentrated cohesion. Between Threadgill's scattershot flute and alto sax, the sleek tuba or trombone work of Jose Davila, and Liberty ...

| | Chris Botti In Boston CDs (2009) With DVD
Bar Torque CD music
$17.09 A sequel of sorts to Chris Botti's 2006 PBS special, LIVE WITH ORCHESTRA & SPECIAL GUESTS, the September 2008 event LIVE IN BOSTON found the sartorially splendid cool jazz trumpeter accompanied by the Boston Symphony and a collection of celebrity vocalists. Also available as a DVD, the concert delivers an overview of popular music, with jazz standards like "I've Got You Under My Skin" right alongside "Ave Maria" and Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You." Whether featuring rocker Steven Tyler, AMERICAN IDOL chanteuse Katharine McPhee, or pop-opera superstar Josh Groban, all the tunes are presented in Botti's inimitable, Chet Baker-influenced uber-smooth style.
Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned ...
| | Max Roach Deeds, Not Words CD (1958)
Bar Torque music CDs
$8.69 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Master jazz drummer Max Roach pretty much put the "be" in bebop, playing with practically every major figure in jazz, from Bird to Dizzy to Miles to Mingus and more. It's a tribute to his own musical vision that his numerous solo recordings are just as worthy as his famous sessions. ...
| | Alejandro Escovedo Bourbonitis Blues CD (1999)
Bar Torque songs
$10.79 Alejandro Escovedo has an impressive resume: he was a member of one of the first San Francisco punk bands, the Nuns, and was in one of the early country-punk bands, Rank & File, as well as the under-rated Austin roots-rockers the True Believers. He's related to both Pete Escovedo and Sheila E, and on his WITH THESE HANDS (Rykodisc) album, his backup included Willie Nelson and Jennifer Warnes. On BOURBONITIS BLUES, he mixes evocative originals ("I Was Drunk," "Sacramento & Polk") with well-chosen and unusual covers (John Cale's "Amsterdam," a tantalizingly slow take on the Gun Club's "Sex Beat," Ian Hunter's "Irene Wilde") to show his scope as an artist.
Escovedo shows a rare grasp of rock & roll history, and the blues and country roots it sprang from. Moreover, he doesn't merely rehash/recycle the past, he builds on it. His originals are thoughtful and intensely personal but never self-absorbed, and they rock with a controlled passion that recalls the Rolling Stones in their early 1970s prime. Alejandro Escovedo proves that ...
| | Herbie Mann Standing Ovation At Newport CD (1965) Reissued
Bar Torque album
$10.49 The performance by Herbie Mann's group was one of the high points of the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival. This album includes Mann's "Mushi Mushi" from an earlier date, but it is the lengthy versions of "Patato," "Stolen Moments," and particularly the encore "Comin' Home Baby" from Newport that are most memorable. During this period, the flutist's group ...
