| | Augustus Pablo East Of The River Nile CD (1977)
Ruffer Version: At King Tubby's 1974-1978 CD music
$14.25 A physically frail and somewhat gossamer-looking Rastaman, Augustus Pablo was the unlikeliest of reggae pioneers. Armed only with a humble melodica and a mystical, Far Eastern-influenced sound, Pablo (born Horace Swaby) revolutionized roots reggae and dub, both as an instrumentalist and behind the mixing desk as a producer. EAST OF THE RIVER NILE, his first self-produced instrumental set, appeared in 1978 at the dawn of the dancehall era. While the album's pure, meditative vibes focus on Eastern themes and Rastafarian spirituality, a fine show of meat-and-potatoes roots musicianship is provided by members of the legendary groups the Wailers and the Upsetters.
The best of the pure instrumental albums in Pablo's catalog, East of the River Nile finds the melodica master stretching out on various keyboards ...
| | Mark Knopfler Sailing To Philadelphia CDs (2000) includes bonus DVD
Ruffer Version: At King Tubby's 1974-1978 music CDs
$21.35 Having crafted such a singular sound for himself both in Dire Straits and as a respected film composer, it's gratifying to hear that Mark Knopfler's consummate musicianship has only gotten better on what is only his second solo album in a career that began in the mid- '70s. For SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA, Knopfler once again looks to America for inspiration, starting with the stirring title track that draws from Thomas Pynchon's fictionalized account of English adventurers/surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon and which finds James Taylor playing Mason to Knopfler's Dixon. Other numbers benefiting from this American muse are the ethereal "Sands of Nevada," the Farfisa-driven "Do America" and the low-key "Prairie Wedding" (featuring alt country stalwarts Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, who also appear on the chugging "Speedway At Nazareth").

| | Trojan Dub Rarities Box CDs (2005) Remastered
Ruffer Version: At King Tubby's 1974-1978 songs
$14.25 After two other three-disc budget sets of dub, Trojan must be out of crucial tracks, right? Hardly, and in this case, "rarities" doesn't mean "curio," either. Discs one and two far outshine disc three, but Trojan Dub Rarities Box is nearly as satisfying as the two non-rarities volumes already available, probably even more satisfying for the dub collector who'll agree that some of these tracks have been mighty hard to find. Of special note is Augustus Pablo's "Babylon Police Thief Dub," a fantastic dub of Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" that rears its reissue head only every once in a while. Dub godfather Lee "Scratch" Perry is well represented by jems like the paranoid "Tedious Dub" and the more fun than it sounds "Iron Wolf," but where the collection really shines is by shedding new light on producer Niney the Observer and offering a set of Tapper Zukie tracks that should increase awareness of his often ignored dub work. Niney's hands ...
