To be honest, there are some stern folk for whom Natalie Cole will never be forgiven for the overdubbed mega-hit duets she recorded with her late father. That would be a shame for them, because they'd miss out on the fact that Cole, as she's spent the years since the aforementioned hits proving, is one damn fine standards singer. She's got it all; a confident, relaxed delivery, an easy sense of swing, and of course unerring range and chops. On ASK A WOMAN WHO KNOWS, her first recording for famed jazz label Verve, she displays her gifts with grace and consistency, whether she's simmering over the Brazilian-tinged "Tell Me All About It" or moving mellifluously through the BAGHDAD CAFE tune "Calling You." Try to forget "Unforgettable" and see what's going down here.
ASK A WOMAN WHO KNOWS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Better Than Anything" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "I'm Glad There Is You" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals.

Stephanie Needs To Show Some Respect. Granted, this is Natalie Cole's 4th foray into covering Jazz standards, but let us give props where props are due. Firstly, Natalie Cole has sold millions and millions of records since her debut in 1975. Secondly, though I, too, am bored with her whole Jazz repetoire of the past almost 20 years, she STILL can throw down with the rest of 'em. She's a Soul sista at heart. So, Stephanie, dear, before you get to making too much of a fool of yourself on a national level, let's learn to appreciate the fact that as great as Kelly Clarkson may be, she can never be compared with the likes of Natalie Cole. There is no comparison. Go get the Q-Tips and clean out your ears. Natalie Cole remains one of the female greats of R&B. Ask a BROTHA who knows. :-) Submitted by whitechocolatebrotha (Portland, ME, USA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Soulful Standards Miss Cole does a great job with more smooth classics, great for those "cognac & cashmere" moments. Submitted by Johnathan (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
BOOOOOO NOT A GOOD CD, STUPID & EMPTY LYRICS AND SHE HAS A HORRIBLE VOICE. TRY BETTER VOCALISTS LIKE KELLY CLARKSON! Submitted by STEPHANIE (NEW JERSEY) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 36 found this helpful.
