One of the top graduates of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma features his own free funk group Spectacle on this noisy and generally interesting album, his fourth for Gramavision. With Byard Lancaster on tenor, alto, flute and bird calls (!), keyboardist Alan Sukennik, guitarist Ronnie Drayton and drummer Dennis Alston (plus a couple of guest musicians), the emphasis is on Tacuma's heavy basslines and the crowded ensembles; two songs (a solo piece and a duet with Alston's drums) are showcases for the leader. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel includes: Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass); Brad Lancaster (saxophone); Alan Sukennik (piano); Ronnie Drayton (guitar); Dennis Alston (drums).

Jukebox album
$12.55 After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley ...

Jukebox music CDs
$15.39 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of ...

| | Susumu Yokota Image: 1983-1998 CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Jukebox CD music
$9.55 Respected techno artist Susumu Yokota took many fans by surprise with IMAGE 1983-1998. Put aside Yokota's reputation for convulsively funky beats and blazing sample-craft. IMAGE rescues and revisits his earliest home-recorded tapes, predating the producer's seduction by the all-conquering 4/4 forces of techno music. Working with a palette of reedy organ, guitar, and delay effects, the former visual artist spins such brittle contrapuntal inventions as "Kaiten Mokuba," "Tayutafu," and "Wani Natte."
But IMAGE does not stop here. Upon listening to these beatless, lo-fi recordings in light of his subsequent techno achievements, Yokota recognized common threads rippling through both phases of his musical explorations. In his forgotten tapes, he discovered the essence of transformation he mistakenly sought in techno's fractal forms. The 1997-1998 tracks that fill out IMAGE trace a re-enlightened and re-inspired ...
| | Future Games/Spirit Of '84 CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Jukebox music CDs
$21.05 This two-disc reissue from BGO combines two of Spirit's more self-indulgent and quirky releases: 1977's Future Games and 1984's aptly titled The Spirit of '84. With Future Games, Randy California let his imagination run wild on this 22-song cycle, with erratic results. While the sound effects and production are a nice touch, the songs meander from one to another without a sense of full development. On top of that, the combination of science fiction, Hawaii, and numerous Star Trek references meshes about as well as carpenter's nails and frogs on a slice of pizza. Translation: it just doesn't. On the flip side, The Spirit of '84 does much better at redeeming California, but this is one of the more misleading releases in the catalog. Essentially a reunion album with Spirit's founding members, over half the songs are re-recordings of their back catalog's finest moments. And while the performances are noteworthy, the updated synth sounds and production values make them inferior to the originals. It's not the best work in the Spirit catalog, but far from the worst, either. ~ Rob Theakston
Two albums, from '77 and '84 respectively--the last in BGO's reissue of Spirit's Phonogram years. UK digitally remastered reissue packaged in a slip case plus new sleeve notes. BGO Records. 2005.

$18.55 After the huge success of the soundtrack for the soap opera O Clone, released as a CD called Maktub, Marcus Viana seized the moment to release some unreleased material and parts of themes from other soundtracks on this CD. Actually, this is an uncommon work from him because the tracks were directed to another kind of public not familiar with progressive rock and new age material. The music ...
