| | Jerry Gonzalez Y Los Piratas Del Flamenco CD (2004)
European Echoes CD music
$14.15 For the most part, the music is wonderfully spare and calming, evoking dim, smoky Spanish cafes and dusty Andalusian landscapes. Takes on two bebop tunes, Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" ("Donnali") and Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Dream" ("Monk Soniquete"), pick up the tempo a bit, with Josele's guitar suddenly sounding like Charlie Christian performing at a classical recital. "Gitanos de la Cava" and "Obsesion" feature the singing of Diego "El Cigala", which, with its Middle Eastern inflections, keeps the program varied and fresh. This is unique, accessible fusion music that proves Gonzalez's skill for bridging multiple cultures with jazz.
In general, flamenco music has not readily lent itself to fusion experiments, but that clearly didn't stop multi-instrumentalist Jerry Gonzalez from trying. With Gonzalez's percussion and breathy, ...
| | John Zorn Masada - Live At Tonic 1999 DVD (2004)
European Echoes music CDs
$25.89 The world of modern jazz would be a very different beast if it weren't for the emergence of John Zorn in the 1970s. Unafraid to incorporate a diverse range of styles into his music, Zorn had drawn on heavy metal, punk, classical, and a number of other influences to help drag the genre away from its traditional leanings. Masada are one of his many groups, with a line up completed by Greg Cohen, Dave Douglas, and Joey Baron. This show features Zorn and Masada performing in their native New York City, at a regular haunt for the band, Tonic, on the Lower East Side. The concert was filmed in the summer of 1999, and sees the band performing with their usual enthusiasm, excitement, and ambition to push the boundaries of music back further than many of their contemporaries.
This beautiful DVD captures the ...

| | Muhal Richard Abrams Streaming CD (2006)
European Echoes CD music
$13.25 Composer, pianist, and bandleader Muhal Richard Abrams has been one of the quiet champions of the avant-garde underground since the 1960s. He churned out free jazz in various forms right through the turn of the century, always pushing at boundaries and expanding his range. While 2001's THE VISIBILITY OF THOUGHT found Abrams exploring contemporary classical territory, 2006's STREAMING is something of a return to form. Joined by fellow avant veterans George Lewis and Roscoe ...

European Echoes CD music
$17.45 Le Tigre's 'This Island' album is a deliriously addictive, hybrid sound the band calls "feminist punk electronic music." It's a mix of drum-machine samples, synth hooks, buzzing guitar loops, gang vocals, and foolproof bass-lines. Now we take it one step further with the aid of some of the world's biggest names on remixing duties, resulting in an irresistibly danceable collection of anthemic tracks whilst still retaining the thought-provoking ...
