Underdog album
$13.35 This pop-punk outfit started out young--VERY young. They were still in their teens when they released their first album, and this one--their third--naturally finds them still flush with youthful enthusiasm but bearing distinct signs of songwriting maturity. There's no slowdown of excitement on STAY WHAT YOU ARE--the band still practices four-on-the-floor, heavy-guitar punk-pop a la Green Day or Blink-182. But their lyrical smarts put them in a place somewhere in between those two bands; smarter and more purposeful than ...

Underdog music CDs
$12.15 My Chemical Romance are another in the swarm of hard-edged, emo-tinged punk-pop bands flooding the market of the early-to-mid 2000s, working firmly in a post-hardcore musical vein that doesn't rule out sensitivity and inspection in lyrical content. On I BROUGHT YOU MY BULLETS, YOU BROUGHT ME YOUR LOVE, the band's debut, My Chemical Romance shows that they don't fool around on either count. Bolstered by chugging, crunching guitars, pulse-quickening rhythms, and passionate, anthemic melodies straight from the alt-rock rulebook, MCR unleashes a blistering intensity that encourages raised, clenched fists, while incorporating elements of nu metal and punk with surprising skill.
Lead singer Gerard Way has a way with words, and I BROUGHT YOU MY BULLETS also serves as a tour through the bleaker corridors of the human spirit. Way's angst-infused vocals and lyrics about loneliness, anger, substance abuse, and alienation, prove MCR is fully ...
| | Yellowcard Ocean Avenue CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Underdog songs
$15.25 Yellowcard's major-label debut is that rarity in latter-day punk-rock--a nuanced, almost subtle collection of distinctive songs with lyrics sensitive enough to reference moonlight, the ocean, and DEATH OF A SALESMAN, amongst its more usual expressions of post-teen angst. (And, by the way, they also have a violinist.) But, far from consigning them to the ranks of the irredeemably nerdy, OCEAN AVENUE is the sound of a young band flexing its imaginative muscle and emerging from behind the one-sound-fits-all sonic shadow of Green Day to produce a singularly distinctive collection of songs.
Sure, the album's opening salvo "Way Away" is straight out of the SoCal punk rock playbook, but by the shimmering intro to "Only One" it's increasingly obvious that there's more on offer here than one-dimensional posturing. It's not that Yellowcard are any slouches in the sonic thrash department, as evidenced by the breathless ...

| | Tracy Chapman CD (1988)
Underdog songs
$9.19 Tracy Chapman exploded out of the Boston folk scene in the late eighties, carrying the acoustic guitar-playing singer/songwriter mantle to a more political and socially conscious level than had recently been achieved. Her deep alto and throttled vocal delivery, combined with attentively scrutinized social scenarios presented in a simple, accessible manner, rocketed Tracy to the top of the charts and into the Grammy record books. Instrumentally crisp and minimal, TRACY CHAPMAN is a compelling statement from the no-holds-barred black singer/songwriter, stealing the focus away from the popular folk mafia.
Chapman expresses a heretofore unmined black, feminist, disenfranchised point of view--from the helpless-but-hopeful underclass of the smash hit "Fast Car," to the defiant politicos of "Talkin' `Bout A Revolution." In regards to other issues, Tracy responds to Suzanne Vega's "Luka" with her own a capella song about domestic violence, "Behind The Wall"; and the percussive "Mountains O' Things" is about material wealth. But TRACY CHAPMAN is not all social politics; there are several rapturously tender love songs ...

Underdog songs
$28.89 This deluxe U.K. import version includes a complete bonus disc packed with live and unreleased tracks.
The follow-up to the hit album THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF REASON, Chimaira's self-titled third CD continues the group's quest to become the most pummeling, no-frills, downright scary metalcore band on the planet. With the addition of new drummer Kevin Talley, who adds an even greater degree of rhythmic precision and aggression, Chimaira further refines its unique combination of old-school thrash and modern death metal.
"Nothing Remains" takes harmonic cues from Scandinavian black metal, delivering horror-movie-worthy chord progressions with a speed and drive equal to the most mind-numbing industrial beats. "Left for Dead" opens with military-style snare drum rudiments before bursting into a scathing denunciation of greed that recalls early Metallica. Though Chimaira's electronic elements are more subtle than on previous albums, well-placed sound effects add to the record's intense spookiness, particularly on the epic seven-and-a-half minute closer "Lazarus," a chilling, yet strangely sensitive, narrative about a friend's suicide.
Limited Deluxe Edition 'Black Box' double CD features live and unreleased tracks including 'Clayden' & 'Malignant' that were recorded during the 2005 Chimaira Sessions, plus 7 live tracks recorded in 2003 on the European Roadrage tour 'Power Trip', 'Cleansation', 'Severed', 'Eyes Of A Criminal', 'Down Again', 'The Dehumanizing Process' & 'Pure Hatred'. Chimaira refuse to write songs that fit ...
| | Blink 182 Greatest Hits CD (2005) (Import) Bonus DVD; Sweden
Underdog album
$19.69 In early 2005, SoCal pop-punk act Blink 182 announced that it was going on "indefinite hiatus," and this 17-track retrospective followed later that year. The disc charts the trio's career in chronological order, beginning with their early work (recorded before drummer Travis Barker joined), including the revved-up "Dammit," which first revealed the band's teen-friendly, pop-minded potential. Blink 182 really hit a winning streak when it gained the fierce drumming of Barker and the potent production of Jerry Finn, a point proven by the exuberant "What's My Age Again?" and the sing-songy anthem "All the Small Things." Rounding out GREATEST HITS are two non-album songs, the propulsive "Not ...

Back Before Yellowcard was crap this cd is easily their best cd. it featured them before they got all crappy and poppy. Underdog is a good song to start this cd off, i listened to this ep so many times the last two yeras of HS and still listen to it now. If u like this cd i would recommend One For The Kids, it has similar sound to it, but if this is your first yellowcard cd be prepared to be dissapointed when u hear ocean avenue cause it will just sound horrible Submitted by James (Cali) Was This Review Helpful? avondale is a great track Unlike some of the other reviewers, "Underdog" is actually my least favorite Yellowcard song (still puts it above most every song from most other bands). That's probably because I'm significantly older than your average Yellowcard fan and a few years removed from high school. However, "Avondale" is an amazing track and one of my favorite Yellowcard songs. And tracks 3-5 follow it up well. So, with something for everyone, you should definitely check this one out. These guys are worth it! Submitted by gabry_ll (arlington, va) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
