Credited to the Ivor Cutler Trio, 1967's Ludo was produced by George Martin and recorded shortly after longtime fan John Lennon cast Cutler as Buster Bloodvessel in the Beatles' ill-fated Magical Mystery Tour film. Backed by bassist Gill Lyons and percussionist Trevor Tompkins, Cutler indulges his taste for trad jazz on tunes like the boogie-woogie "Mud" and the Goon Show-like "Good Morning! How Are You? Shut Up!" and "A Great Grey Grasshopper." Since Martin had produced records by Peter Sellers and the other Goons prior to the Beatles' success, his sensibility matches Cutler's perfectly, making Ludo one of Cutler's very best albums. It's certainly his funniest; the brief "I'm Happy," which continues "and I'll punch the man who says I'm not," and the outstandingly bizarre "A Suck of My Thumb" are probably the goofiest songs the artist ever wrote. Ludo is light on his usual poems and recitations, but the two short stories, "Mary's Drawer" and "The Shapely Balloon," are as funny and clever as any of Cutler's spoken works. ~ Stewart Mason
The only official recording by the Ivor Cutler Trio, this collection of some of Mr. Cutler's best loved songs, poems & stories were recorded in laissez-faire style by George Martin at Abbey Road, as one of the very first Air Productions. Highlighting the celebrated Scottish poet & raconteur's skill as a pianist & arranger as well as his unique way with language, it is one of his best recordings. Having launched Mr. Cutler's film career with a typically enigmatic starring role in the Beatles' film 'Magical Mystery Tour', which made him a film star of some renown, it was inevitable that Parlophone the Beatles' then label, would want a recording by the great man on it's catalogue.2002.

| | Leiber & Stoller Story, Vol. 1: Hard Times - The Los Angeles Years 1951-56 CD (2004)
Ludo CD music
$15.05 Although the first installment of this three-volume series covers a lot of ground in the early career of the famed R&B/rock & roll songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, be aware that it's not exactly a compilation of the best and most familiar interpretations of their compositions. Rather than focus on the most famous Leiber & Stoller covers, the compilers chose, as the liner notes explain, "to keep the 'obvious' content to a minimum and go for either versions of L&S songs that don't get reissued so often or, in some cases, the original versions of L&S songs that begat much better-known 'covers.'" As a consequence, some obvious ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Ludo music CDs
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along ...

| | Archie Leggett Bananamour CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Ludo songs
$13.85 Recorded live at BBC Studios, London, England on September 20, 1972. Includes liner notes by Kevin Ayers & Martin Wakeling.
Bananamour is ripe with Kevin Ayers' most mature and accessible compositions to date. Ayers grounded himself in a newly formed trio for his follow-up to Whatevershebringswesing. With bassist Archie Leggett and drummer Eddie Sparrow at the hub, Ayers selected guest artists for a handful of the tracks: Whole World colleague Dave Bedford ("Beware of the Dog"), Gong's new guitarist Steve Hillage ("Shouting in a Bucket Blues"), and former Soft Machine mates Robert Wyatt ("Hymn") and Mike Ratledge ("Interview"). "Interview" is easily one of the album's strongest, most original tunes, charged with a rugged, positively electrifying guitar sound courtesy of Ayers and psychedelic organ flourishes by Ratledge. And "Shouting in a Bucket Blues" is Ayers' inspired pop/blues groove. Armed with a few biting lyrics, the song became a concert staple, fronted by a number of well-known guitarists over the years including Mike Oldfield and Andy Summers. Hillage delivers heat in this original studio recording of the song; he went on to repeat the performance many times while in Europe with Ayers' Bananatour band, Decadence. The song "Decadence" is the album's centerpiece and towering achievement. Here, Ayers, Leggett, and Sparrow create progressive, atmospheric music quite unlike anything else on the record. An original, spine-tingling workout with potent lyrics concerning Nico, "Decadence" is a kind of superior foreshadowing to the following year's "Confessions of Dr. Dream" epic, which features a vocal collaboration with Nico on "Part One." The compositions on Bananamour emphasize the vocal aspects of the material; in fact, Ayers secured the industry's premier session vocalists to back him on the recordings: Liza Strike, Doris Troy, and Barry St. John. In various configurations, the trio fleshs out the songs, adding a compelling ...

| | Lotus Nomad CD (2004)
Ludo CD music
$12.39 Opening with a peppy two-step acid riff, this debut studio album by the Philadelphian five-piece combo Lotus soon reveals the band to be not so much a dance act, but rather an electronically inclined jazz-funk outfit, led by the minimal guitar pluck of Mike Rempel. But that doesn't mean the electronic influence becomes moot. Quite the contrary; Rempel's quick-picked soft blues six-string style often merges with the arpeggiated keyboards of Luke Miller, making it difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins. Similarly, Steve Clemens' drum playing scoots right along with Chuck Morris' electronic percussion which skips at a tempo faster than your average downtempo offering. Pushing up towards the house music zone, "Livingston Storm" and "Travel" ride a steady thump while "Plan Your Root" offers an easy listening version of the drum'n'bass break. This interesting fusion of light jazz motifs with dance/club rhythms and effects makes for strange bedfellows. In fact, over the course of any given song, the group can't seem to decide on which side of the fence ...
