Standard 70's folk/rock mix...
I remember taking a chance on this album back in the days of vinyl and enjoying the easy, mellow sound and mostly consistent delivery. I have one picky note regarding the current marketing that lists only Bernie and not his bandmate Michael Georgiades as the artist. Michael wrote and sang lead on half or more of the songs! While never a "name" in the music biz more interested in the "star-making machinery behind the popular song" Georgiades deserves, at the very least, some recogition for his contribution here, after all, the name of the band was the Bernie Leadon-Michael Georgiades Band. Maybe the record company (who apparently felt it necessary to attach a sticker reading "former member of the Eagles" to the front of the CD) didn't believe they could move enough product based on the merits of the material inside. Hey, this stuff is nearly 30 yrs. old but it brings back some fond memories and is a good representation of the sound that dominated the mid-seventies on the periphery of so called "country rock".

SMOOTH HARMONIES and ACOUSTIC GUITARS
Before Joe Walsh and Don Felder entered the lineup, the guitar work in the Eagles' fold was handled by Bernie Leadon and Glenn Frey. Leadon is a multi-instrumentalist adept at not only guitars but mandolin and banjo as well (the latter best showcased in the Eagles' Journey of the Sorcerer, from the One of These Nights album). On this effort, however, it is acoustic guitar that is highlighted along with some exceptional harmony vocals and a touch of mandolin and piano. The songwriting is sound (there's only one real clunker), the recording quality is very good and translates well to CD. This is music that will take you right down to a sunset bonfire at the beach, watching the sun gently slide behind the horizon... Leadon put together the perfect backup band to spotlight the smooth post-Eagles sound he was after, and my only gripe is that this is the only album he made. Highly recommended.

A Natural Progression
Bernie titled this album "Natural Progressions" and it really says a lot about what this music represents in terms of the Southern California rock scene of the seventies. By 1977, a distinct R&B influence had corrupted a lot of the laid back singer-songwriters around LA. Bernie wisely went the other way on this, his only solo record to date. If you are a fan of the Asylum era, do not overlook this gem.
