Songs About Leaving is the third full-length release from Seattle nouveau rockers Carissa's Wierd. Highly deserving of the label "art rock" in many respects and "indie folk-rock" in others, Carissa's Wierd presents 12-tracks of hauntingly poignant vignettes, brought to life through a dynamic employment of classic string and keyboard elements (standouts include "Farewell to All These Rotten Teeth" and "September Come Take This Heart Away"). Jenn Ghetto and co-singer Matthew Brooke are extremely subtle in their vocalizations, with "You Should Be Hated Here" casting an almost ghost-like pall over chamber pop melodies, as well as "The Piano Song" and venomous scenarios "Sofisticated F**k Princess Please Leave Me Alone" and "Ignorant Piece of Sh*t." Their dual guitar play and vocal interchange are also well orchestrated to complement the moody, yet sprightly musical accompaniment of Sarah Standard and Jeff Hellis. Songs About Leaving's abundance of down-turned emotional muck may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it definitely stands out as something not quite so ordinary in the musical landscape. ~ Roxanne Blanford

4 stars "dont mess with texas"
It must be true. What they say about most people from Texas, that is. Silly girl you must not have given it a chance, I'm sure. Stick to music that you can grasp. The listener is in no way left bored and unsatisfied, unless the listener is a complete moron who can't appreciate beautiful music. You put in this CD and its like a musical dose of tranquility and beauty. It's amazing in short, and I have nothing more to say. It was just really disappointing to see that someone didn't like this. They're clearly misunderstood.

4 stars Mood specific
As much as don’t want to like this third album from Seattle’s weepiest band, I do. Being also that they are media darlings, I don’t want to write about them, but I must! Like a somber pied piper, they have lured me into their morose web of lush musical arrangements, melding pianos, guitars and strings like an Irish Folk tale. I can’t help getting lugubrious and staring out the window at gray clouds contemplating love and loss and the distance between us… Each new listen reveals yet another undiscovered moment ringing true, striking out in its sincere and hushed honesty, inciting a raw perspective leading to a grueling, visceral insight, that is surely as sad as the violin mourning in the background. The five piece never lets their audience relish in one moment of hope or happiness but rather holds their head under the weather of such heavy sadness that the rain would become a narcissistic endeavor were it not so entrancing. I’m no sadist, but I can’t help listening. It’s like driving past a car wreck and staring.

1 star Carissa's BORING
I bought carissa with high expectations. Unfortunately, this CD totally lacks melody. There is almost no rhythmic interest. The listener is left bored and unsatisfied. There is a total lack of inspiration. Why did they bother to put out such a lousy CD?
