Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody is an ambitious fellow. Within ten months, the Reindeer Section recorded a second album, Son of Evil Reindeer, to follow up the critical indie hit Y'All Get Scared Now, Ya Hear! Again, Lightbody gathered some of his Scottish musical mates like Eva's Jenny Reave, Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat, and Richard Colburn and Mick Cooke of Belle & Sebastian, but added Roddy Woomble (Idlewild), Eugene Kelly (Eugenius, the Vaselines), and Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) to the musical fray, for a total of 27 artists. Son of Evil Reindeer is an emotional album, far more somber and inquisitive. Lightbody looks into the mind's spiritual journeys and derives a glowing batch of songs. The inner beauty of Scotland can be heard throughout Son of Evil Reindeer, but the Reindeer Section focus on human conditions. Lightbody's low, glassy vocals sweep over the coolness of "Grand Parade" and "Budapest." The charming vocal combo of Kelly, Blake, and Reave breathes a freshness on "Strike Me Down," but pure pop bliss stretches further on the countrified romp of "You Are My Joy." Moffat is a muzzy, slick vocal crooner on "Whodunnit?," making this track the album's golden moment. The Reindeer Section are clever in their use of intricate instrumentation, making the lo-fi sketch of Son of Evil Reindeer sound more cohesive. It's sun-kissed with love-themed songs, and Lightbody should be applauded. His musical vision combines simple, charming melodies and threads of brass and electronica. It's a magical formula. His songwriting, too, has shaped into a delightful book of discovery. Indie pop fans, brace yourselves for a daydream trip. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Son Of Evil Reindeer songs
$17.45 When German new wave band Trio broke up in 1985, the movement had long since lost the impact and vitality it had in the early '80s. The group's leader, Stephan Remmler, began work on a solo effort shortly afterwards, and despite the fact that German-language pop music was disappearing from the charts again, he managed to score two massive hits with his self-titled 1986 album: its first single, "Keine Sterne in Athen" ("No Stars in Athens") is a catchy and witty little tune that sounds like a perfect transition from Trio's minimalistic mew wave punk to Remmler's new musical direction, a somewhat ironic fusion of the German schlager -- the kitschy, simplistic pop music of earlier generations -- and modern pop. The album's other hit single, "Alles Hat Ein Ende (Nur Die Wurst Hat Zwei)" ("Everything Has an End [Only a Sausage Has Two]"), even became a staple of the German carnival, getting played over and over again in the alcohol-induced cheeriness of the beer tents.
Musically, Remmler's writing has always been seeking simplicity -- short, repetitive riffs and basic rhythms, concise lyrics and catchy melodies -- so his departure from the new wave punk of his former group isn't as radical as it might seem at first listen. Remmler is still writing songs with the same characteristics, but he explores other genres this time around -- genres which ...

She moved to Austin in 1979, where she met DJ and producer Joe Gracey, an instrumental figure in the Austin progressive country scene who she eventually married. In 1981 she recorded her first album, Kimmie Rhodes and the Jackalope Brothers when Willie Nelson invited her to use his studio. In 1985 she recorded her second album, Man In the Moon. Her third album Angels Get The Blues, recorded at the original Sun Studio in Memphis, was released in 1989. These records led to a series of British and European tours which received rave reviews. Her promotional tours created a solid fan base in the U.K. and Europe. She has headlined with her band at festivals in Canada, The United Kingdom, Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands and has appeared on many European and American TV and radio broadcasts. She has also appeared at many of Willie's Farm Aid concerts and July 4th Picnics. Willie says Kimmie is "an undiscovered superstar" and together they recorded two of her originals for his album Just One Love. Kimmie recently appeared on Austin City Limits with Emmylou Harris, Dave ...
