Sylvan Treasure album
$15.65 Vibraphonist Gary Burton's classic quartet of the late `60s, consisting of Burton and guitarist Larry Coryell (later, Pat Metheny), bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Roy Haynes, are often credited with laying the groundwork for the aggressive jazz-rock fusions of the `70s. Nearly four decades on from their, initial, pioneering efforts, original quartet members and jazz legends Burton, Metheny, and Swallow, along with newcomer drummer Antonio Sanchez, have assembled for QUARTET LIVE!, an 11-song live document recorded at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, California. Revisiting Burton (and Metheny) penned originals ...
| | Grover Washington, Jr A Secret Place CD (1976) Remastered; Digipak
Sylvan Treasure CD music
$9.58 A SECRET PLACE was produced by Creed Taylor and issued on his Kudu imprint, while the versatile David Matthews arranged the horn section. This lineup may not be surprising, but the scope of the recording is. Washington could have gone the easy route and followed up his R&B chart success with a series of uptempo, rousing tracks that leaned heavier on funk--in the style of the title tracks of both his previous albums, 1974's MISTER MAGIC and 1975's FEEL SO GOOD. But he went in a different direction, at least partially. The bottom line on A SECRET PLACE is that while the set did well commercially, it got nowhere near the critical praise of its predecessors. That's a shame, because it is a truly fine album whose grooves and pleasures stand the test of time easily.

| | David "Fathead" Newman Blessing CD (2009)
Sylvan Treasure CD music
$13.79 The late David "Fathead" Newman was one of those rare musicians who could shine in almost any context--his powerful tenor saxophone made its mark in rhythm & blues (he was in Ray Charles's band for many years), rock & roll, blues, and jazz. His final recording session took place mere weeks before his death, and BLESSING is a fine last testament. It's a sturdy set of mainstream bebop with undertones of blues, gospel, and soul, Newman's tenor balancing a steely-hard sound with a breathy, romantic approach (think Ben Webster meets King Curtis). The program is a nice mix of renowned and lesser-known tunes, the band (including vibist Steve Nelson and guitarist Peter Bernstein) savvy and in the pocket.

| | Bryan Ferry Bride Stripped Bare CD (1978)
Sylvan Treasure music CDs
$16.29 A concept album of sorts, inspired in part by Brian Ferry's highly public breakup with supermodel Jerry Hall, THE BRIDE STRIPPED BARE features songs whose view of romance is, unsurprisingly, a tad bleaker than previous. The singer's persona here is less lounge lizard than the sort of guy who drives around L.A. in the rain ("Can't Let Go"), hoping to wipe out on Dead Man's Curve.
A strong batch of originals is on offer here, which, thanks in part to guitarist Waddy Wachtel, lean more toward the West Coast studio rock of Jackson Browne or Warren Zevon than is usual for Ferry. There are also a couple of covers that reinforce the bleak breakup theme, including what must be the most morose version of Sam and Dave's "Hold On (I'm Coming)" ever recorded. Not necessarily Ferry's best album, but certainly his most human.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
