Taj Mahal is joined by Indian master musicians N. Ravikiran and V.M. Bhatt on a selection of tunes that ultimately owe more to obvious blues clichés than they do to cross-cultural collaboration. Perhaps that's because nearly half of the album's tunes -- including Robert Johnson's "Come on in My Kitchen," "Mary Don't You Weep," and "Johnny Too Bad" -- have long been staples of Taj Mahal's concert catalog. This isn't to say that the set doesn't have any moments of inspired improvisation and nuanced playing; there are a few instances of brilliance. But that seems a terrible waste of the talent gathered, unless the listener is looking for nothing more than an unlikely blues workout. ~ Brian Beatty

Mumtaz Mahal album
$10.69 Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on November 26, 1969. Originally released on Poppy Records. Includes liner notes by Paul Kingsbury.
For those most familiar with the late great songwriter Townes Van Zandt as a hard-living, rugged road veteran who'd seen the bad side of the highway several times too many, it may come as something of a revelation to step into this sonic time capsule where Van Zandt is a bright-eyed, fresh-faced young troubadour full of promise and vigor. There were many young men of the post-BLONDE ON BLONDE era who entered into the New Dylan sweepstakes, but as this 1969 Carnegie Hall ...
| | Albert King Born Under A Bad Sign CD (1967)
Mumtaz Mahal CD music
$9.75 The giant left-handed guitarist was no stranger to the recording studio by 1966, but Albert King had still to make his mark with the record-buying public. When he linked up with the cream of Stax's Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Mumtaz Mahal music CDs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield ...

Mumtaz Mahal album
$6.49 On the original LP, the song "Drifting Blues" faded out after about 3 minutes. The CD contains the complete 11:31 version.
Released in the same year as 1975's THERE'S ONE IN EVERY CROWD, E.C. WAS HERE is a live album short on content but long in presentation. Backed by his usual mid-70's studio cohorts (George Terry, Jamie Oldaker, Yvonne Elliman, Marcy Levy, etc.), Clapton ignored his then-current material off CROWD and 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD, instead choosing to explore his immediate, post-Cream era along with some extended, old favorites. "Presence Of The Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home" were retrieved from Blind Faith's sole album and both are infused with a subtle, ...

The Moodies were a prolific lot in the late '60s. This, the post-Denny Laine lineup's fourth album, was the second to be released in 1969. It was the group's most mature, fully realized effort to date, arguably surpassing even ...
