Mumtaz Mahal
$9.55 Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on November 26, 1969. Originally released on Poppy Records. Includes liner notes by Paul Kingsbury.
For those most familiar with the late great songwriter Townes Van Zandt as a hard-living, rugged road veteran who'd seen the bad side of the highway several times too many, it may come as something of a revelation to step into this sonic time capsule where Van Zandt is a bright-eyed, fresh-faced young troubadour full of promise and vigor. There were many young men of the post-BLONDE ON BLONDE era who entered into the New Dylan sweepstakes, but as this 1969 Carnegie Hall performance shows, Van Zandt was one of the only entrants who was actually up to the task.
With a clear voice full of youthful vitality, he moves through amiable Woody Guthrie-style talking blues on "Talking Thunderbird Wine Blues" just as easily as he delivers songpoetry worthy not just of Dylan but of Shakespeare (you heard it right) on "Rake." The cutting, surreal imagery of the stunning "Lungs" proves that he'd already staked out his own shockingly unique territory in a world apart from even the aforementioned bards, while "Tecumseh Valley" finds him fully capable of writing a modern but timeless folk song. Don't get this one for the previously ...

| | Yanni Live: The Concert Event CD (2006)
Mumtaz Mahal
$13.89 This concert recording captures Yanni performing live in Las Vegas in 2005. Featuring a large, talented ensemble, LIVE emphasizes the Greek composer's penchant for sweeping musical vistas, highly charged instrumental interplay, and the fusion of styles from around the globe. Live strings and brass complement Yanni's trademark keyboards, while other instruments, including didgeridoo and hammered dulcimer, flesh out the sound. There is quite a bit of stretching out here, ...
| | Rodrigo Y Gabriela 11:11 CDs (2009) Digipak
Mumtaz Mahal
$11.85 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, ...

The Moodies were a prolific lot in the late '60s. This, the post-Denny Laine lineup's fourth album, was the second to be released in 1969. It was the group's most mature, fully realized effort to date, arguably surpassing even the milestone DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED in its elegance and vision. The Moodies were always capable of both songcraft and experimentalism, but this was the first time they combined them both successfully. Mike Pinder's dramatically arcing mellotron is the perfectly complement to the group's lush vocal harmonies, which are colored by rich acoustic guitar textures.
Things open on a mind-bendingly psychedelic note with the electrical storm of "Higher and Higher," but soon the waters calm. Justin Hayward's brief acoustic ballad "I Never Thought I'd Live to be a Hundred" is among the band's loveliest tunes, and it leads into "Beyond," an ambitious instrumental that is the Moodies at their most progressive. Throughout the album, the mixture of winningly melodic balladry, poignant folk-rock and ambitious prog-rock ...
