Two master musicians engage in a fascinating dialogue, blending the Indian rag with the Arabian maqam. These two musical forms are beautifully complementary, but also contrast enough to make things interesting. ~ Tim Sheridan
(SACD-HYBRID) This is another historic recording of a virtuoso of the Arabian classical tradition, who performs here on both oud and violin with Hindustani master V.M. Bhatt. The maqam of the Arabic world and the rag of the subcontinent fuse into a music

| | Oscar Peterson Exclusively For My Friends Vol. I: Action (1964) Hybrid
Saltanah
$18.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
In the early '60s Oscar Peterson befriended producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, who recorded Peterson on a number of occasions in his private studio while the veteran pianist was still signed to Verve. Action is made up of the earliest sessions recorded by Brunner-Schwer, featuring Peterson with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen circa 1963 and 1964. Before an audience invited by the producer, the trio begins with a midtempo "At Long Last Love," followed by a gently swinging treatment of Billy Taylor's infrequently performed "Easy Walker" and an understated interpretation of "Tin Tin Deo." Peterson's lyricism is at its peak in his arrangements of "I've Got a Crush On You" and "A Foggy Day." But it is the trio's extended and intricate workout of "Like Someone in Love," clocking in at just over 11 minutes, that leaves the most lasting impression. Not only is Peterson extremely reserved, but Brown's first-rate solo and Thigpen's delicate brushwork help to make this track a masterpiece. Previously reissued as a part of the Exclusively for My Friends box set in 1992, this Super Audio disc features even better sound. ~ Ken Dryden
Oscar Peterson developed a friendship with Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, who proceeded to record the pianist in his first-rate studio beginning in the early '60s, even though Peterson was under an exclusive contract to Verve at the time. The solution to this problem was to wait until after it expired, and then a number of these sessions were released on various BASF or MPS LPs (and later on Pausa LP reissues). Action represents some of Peterson's earliest work for Brunner-Schwer; ...
| | Robert Earl Keen Bigger Piece Of The Sky (1993)
Saltanah
$13.49 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Arguably his finest record, Robert Earl Keen's A Bigger Piece of Sky is a transitional album for him -- he begins to evolve out of the terrain of his organic small-town Texas songwriting comfort zone and to walk the knife's edge between a more expansive meld of roots rock, honky tonk country, and Western back-porch folk. Keen is an inheritor of that particular brand of songwriting that Jerry Jeff Walker established in the 1970s, where the good times and wandering life of a minstrel are juxtaposed against a small-town view of a confounding world. Produced with crisp attention to detail by Garry Velletri, Keen's songs observe the smaller details in a private life, whether that life remains in the same place mentally and physically or, because of some mercurial and difficult-to-place event, slips over the line into forbidden territory. Both kinds of songs are here. The album opens slowly with "So I Can Take My Rest." This is Keen at his very best. He records loneliness, uncertainty, and the vulnerability of a man at his limit, one who seeks only simple solace in the evening to get through another day. The acoustic guitars, whispering snares, and organic bassline drift and drone, propelling the singer to disclose his fear and need. And though tender and subtle, its effect is sharp, going straight for the place in the heart that wakes at night wondering if it is understood by anyone. But there's also the rollicking working-class blues of "Amarillo Highway" and "Corpus Christi Bay," the pathos-drenched country-rock of "Whenever Kindness Fails" and "Blow You Away," and the shimmering uptempo country outlaw tome "Jesse With the Long Hair," which is akin to a honky tonk version of Bob Dylan's "Lilly, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts." But there are other songs here, too, like the slick Western swing of "Daddy Had a Buick," the old-timey country of "Crazy Cowboy Dream," and ...

Saltanah
$34.29 Digitally remastered by Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham & Chris Blair.
When guitarist Steve Hackett left Genesis for a solo career after touring behind 1977's WIND AND WUTHERING, he was the second major defection the group had suffered in as many years. Instead of helplessly disintegrating, the remaining trio circled the wagons and bounced back with the solid AND THEN THERE WERE THREE.
Rather than employ any outside studio musicians to take up the slack, Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford instead played every instrument themselves. Resolutely reflective throughout, this 1978 release finds Genesis populating its songs with a broad range of characters. Among the more memorable ones are the fast-talking record exec on "Down and Out" (a song that could be construed as a veiled swipe at the departed Hackett) and the larger-than-life cattle-driving cowpuncher on the synth-soaked "Ballad of Big." Although the songs on this record are more concise than Genesis' earlier, conceptual work, the band still retains the gift of capturing moods. The breathtaking "Snowbound" perfectly encompasses the feeling of stepping outside into a freshly minted snowfall. An air of yearning runs through "Follow You Follow Me," a romantic yarn that also became Genesis' first American Top 30 hit.
