In 2002, the wheel spun around to Queens Of The Stone Age with SONGS FOR THE DEAF, their bid to save hard rock. While QOTSA founders Nick Oliveri and Josh Homme have often used a variety of players to round out their lineup, having Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) make his return to the drum throne is cause enough to stop the presses. If that weren't enough, add former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan and you've got all the ingredients for hard-rock greatness.
Classic rock fans may recall with fondness the car-radio opening from Kiss' DESTROYER, paid tribute on opening track "Millionare" (SONGS is strung together with a series of similar radio station interludes). The vibe is set with fierce impact; requisite Sabbath-like riffs and T. Rex-from-hell swagger are the weapons of choice. Grohl sounds quite at home behind the drums, leaving double-bass drummers scratching their heads with his single-kick mastery in "First It Giveth." Be it undeniable vocal harmony ("Another Love Song"), balls-out psychedelic rock ("Song For The Dead"), or moody alt-rock grooving ("The Sky Is Falling"), SONGS FOR THE DEAF makes a strong case for rock album of 2002.

Although most people wouyld say the production on this album sucks, i beg to differ. I think it's original, and adds to the overall sound of the band. But what about the music? Some really outstanding songwriting with a very 70's feel, though absolutely not retro. The album actually moves and accentuates like an album should, someting lost in today's bang or a buck culture. Josh Homme's sweet vocal melodies dance like a little kid in your head over the ballsy performance of the entire band, with much kudos to Dave Grohl, former drummer of scream, nirvana, and currently doing solo work in the guise of the foo fighters. I love this band.

This is a mature, majestic concept album, that manages to incorporate influences from across the board - whilst still preserving the unique 'QOTSA' sound.
It has everything to keep the modern rocker happy, with adrenaline pumping hits like 'First it Giveth' and 'Go With the Flow'. Meanwhile the slow psychedelic epics such as 'God is in the Radio', will appeal to those of an 'old school' persuasion.

one of the few CD's where every song is worth listening to, most of them are just rockin out songs, and most of them have real good lyrics, too. If you like rockin out, this cd is for you.
