Not that solo bass recordings signify a common commodity, but Darin Gray's solo electric bass outing might transcend any preconceived notions. Here, the artist stretches avant-garde standards or insinuations to the limit. He integrates the sounds of electrical contacts (input/output) with intermittent bass noise, steely-sounding effects, and fragmented lines. He uses his bass as a vehicle for producing moments of subtle expressionism amid sparsely fabricated manipulations. Sure, there are some interesting moments. Yet one often gets the feeling that Gray is performing for his own gratification, as this program elicits perceptions of a pet project. Overall, the artist conveys a fair amount of wit and ingenuity, but when viewed upon as a whole, his improvisations suffer from a plethora of intensely personalized abstractions. It just doesn't translate all that well. ~ Glenn Astarita

St. Louis Shuffle album
$9.59 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.
The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished ...

St. Louis Shuffle songs
$10.25 The 2010 issue of Mississippi Blues by Sonny Landreth on the Fuel 2000 imprint is not a new album, nor is it a representative compilation of his oeuvre. In fact, the set is a complete repackage of the album entitled The Crazy Cajun Recordings originally issued on CD by Great Britain's Edsel in 1999. The material dates from 1973 and 1977, recorded with the famed Huey P. Meaux (aka the Crazy Cajun) when he wasn't touring with Clifton Chenier as part of his Red Hot Louisiana Band. These 20 tracks range from Landreth's Lafayette, LA-styled take on the acoustic Delta ...
| | Alan Parsons I Robot CD (1977) Bonus Tracks
St. Louis Shuffle album
$6.75 Alan Parsons delivered a detailed blueprint for his Project on their 1975 debut, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, but it was on its 1977 follow-up, I Robot, that the outfit reached its true potential. Borrowing not just its title but concept from Isaac Asimov's classic sci-fi Robot trilogy, this album explores many of the philosophies regarding artificial intelligence -- will it overtake man, what does it mean to be man, what responsibilities do mechanical beings have to their creators, and so on and so forth -- with enough knotty intelligence to make it a seminal text of late-'70s geeks, and while it is also true that appreciating I Robot does require a love of either sci-fi or art rock, it is also true that sci-fi art rock never came any better than this. Compare it to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, released just a year after this and demonstrating ...

| | Celine Dion One Heart CD (2003)
St. Louis Shuffle songs
$7.59 This Asian release contains three bonus tracks: "Forget Me Not," "I Know What Love Is," and "Je T'aime Encore."
The perennial Canadian chanteuse returns to the limelight with this snappy collection of contemporary pop in the vein of Cher's renaissance material, including the car-commercial-associated "I Drove All Night," and "Je T'Aime Encore," which is not, as you might assume, a remake of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin's late-'60s sheet-ripping heavy-breather, but a sensitive acoustic exploration of lost love. Dion ventures into Britney territory with "Love Is All We Need," which is somewhat under the influence of Prince's "When Doves Cry," and she seems quite at home with the anthemic pure pop of the title track. However, it's the ballads, such as the sensitive, percolating "Stand By Your Side," and the climactic "Sorry For Love" that showcase Celine's voice to its best advantage, just as they always have. ONE HEART shows Celine Dion in transition from TITANIC ballad-belter to Las Vegas diva, and it's an assured and confident effort.
Includes the 3 bonus tracks "Forget Me Not", "I Know What Love Is" and "Je T'aime Encore"
Includes liner notes by Celine Dion.
Personnel: Celine Dion (background vocals); Esbjörn Öhrwall (guitar, acoustic guitar); Russ Desalvo (guitar, piano, keyboards); Peer Astrom (guitar, keyboards, drums, ...
